The call

Renzo built early scale in restaking summer but has lost ground to ether.fi and now depends on a shrinking institutional vault run by Bitwise.

Renzo lets people stake Ethereum while earning extra rewards by joining EigenLayer, a system that rents out staked crypto to security projects. The problem is that anyone can build the same thing, and a competitor called ether.fi now leads the category by a huge margin. Renzo tried to pivot by offering a managed vault called Reserve (now run by Bitwise), but that shrunk from $500 million to $260 million in six months, suggesting the new strategy is not working either. The one thing that could matter: if Reserve stops bleeding money and starts growing, it would show Renzo found a real use that competitors cannot easily copy, though even that would be a long shot.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI agent or model directly displaces liquid restaking; automated yield routers could bypass wrapper tokens over time. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: ether.fi. ether.fi took category leadership in liquid restaking while Renzo's TVL fell from $3B to under $100M. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Existing ezETH integrations across DeFi and Binance-linked distribution keep some deposits sticky despite the outflows.
What would change this call
EigenLayer's mainnet AVS slashing mechanism goes live and its early results are reported. A rocky rollout would pressure Renzo's TVL and ezETH peg further.
Renzo Reserve vault AUM under Bitwise reported in coming quarters versus June 2026's $260-278M. Further decline would show the institutional pivot is failing, not stabilizing.
REZ token unlocks scheduled through 2027 actually hit circulating supply. Would add sell pressure while 86% of supply is already circulating.
Key numbers
  • TVL fell from $3B peak to $89-95M (2026-06-01)
  • REZ trades 98.9% below its all-time high (2026-06-26)
  • Reserve vault AUM fell to $260-278M from $500M+ (2026-06-01)
Named risks
  • Core protocol TVL collapsed ~97% from $3B peak (Q1 2024) to $89 to 95M by mid 2026. Severity: high
  • REZ token unlock overhang extends to 2027 with 86% already circulating, pressuring price further. Severity: medium
  • Renzo Reserve institutional vault AUM fell from $500M+ to $260 to 278M within about six months. Severity: medium
  • Recurring phishing and Discord compromise incidents (confirmed 2024-07-22) remain a live operational risk. Severity: medium
  • Sector wide DeFi hacks totaled over $28M in July 2026 alone, exposing cross-chain ezETH deployments to analogous risk. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Renzo Protocol profitable in 2026?
Renzo's homepage reports cumulative fees earned of about $81.97M and $2.30M in buybacks as of mid 2026 (company claimed), while a third party estimator, Growjo, pegs annual revenue at roughly $2.2M, suggesting thin real margins for a ~16 person team.
Has Renzo Protocol lost ground to ether.fi?
Yes. Renzo's TVL collapsed from a peak of roughly $3B at the end of Q1 2024 to $89 to 95M by mid 2026, an approximately 97% drop, while ether.fi's weETH became the liquid restaking category leader through 2025 and 2026.
Is the REZ token down from its all time high?
As of June 26, 2026, REZ trades about 98.9% below its all time high, with 86% of its 10 billion fixed supply already circulating and remaining token unlocks extending into 2027, per ainvest.com reporting.
Who owns Renzo Protocol?
Renzo is privately held and VC backed, founded in 2023 by Lucas Kozinski, Kratik Lodha and James Poole. It raised a $3.2M seed round in January 2024 led by Maven11, plus later backing from Binance Labs (February 2024) and Brevan Howard's digital asset arm (June 2024).
Could AI replace Renzo Protocol?
Unlikely directly. Renzo's operator selection, slashing risk, and vault rebalancing run on deterministic smart contract logic, not AI, as of 2026. No evidence exists of Renzo shipping AI features, so AI is largely irrelevant as a predator or enabler for this specific protocol.
Is it safe to deposit into Renzo Protocol?
Renzo has had a Discord phishing compromise (July 22, 2024, no confirmed fund losses) and operates amid a high risk DeFi sector where July 2026 alone saw over $28M in hacks across other protocols like Bonzo Lend and BonkDAO, per theblock.co reporting.
