The call

Riot's core games print cash and hold players tightly, while Tencent trims experimental bets and Valve chips at esports attention.

Riot Games makes online multiplayer games, mainly League of Legends and Valorant, and makes money from in-game purchases and sponsorships. The company is hard to replace because it has millions of dedicated players, ranked competition systems that took years to build, anti-cheat technology, and professional esports leagues with teams and franchises. However, Counter-Strike 2 from Valve is pulling viewers away from their esports events, new games like 2XKO are failing, and the company is cutting staff, so the big question is whether Riot can keep Valorant growing worldwide and whether its owner Tencent will keep funding experimental new games or only focus on the proven money-makers.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI tools for cinematics, NPC dialogue, and content production. AI is replacing lower-tier art and writing roles inside Riot, not threatening the core ranked ladder or player base. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Valve (Counter-Strike 2). CS2 overtook League in esports viewership in H1 2026, pulling mindshare in competitive shooters even as Valorant keeps growing. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A 15-year ranked ladder, proprietary anti-cheat, 150M+ monthly players, and franchised esports leagues keep switching costs high.
What would change this call
CS2 viewership vs Valorant/League at Champions 2026 and Worlds 2026. Shows whether Valve is durably taking esports mindshare from Riot.
Another Riot headcount reduction wave beyond the 2XKO-linked cuts. Would show Tencent's margin discipline expanding into a broader retreat.
Valorant Mobile's download-chart performance in the months after global launch. Tests whether Riot's new bets can succeed after 2XKO's failure.

Questions people ask
Is Riot Games profitable?
Yes. Riot Games Limited reported €1.85 billion in revenue for FY2024, up from €1.55 billion in FY2023, when it posted a €385 million net profit (about 25% margin), per financial filings analysis dated 2026-07-07 and 2025-05-06.
Who owns Riot Games?
Tencent Holdings owns Riot Games outright. Tencent bought a 93% stake in 2011 for $231-400 million, then acquired the remaining 7% in December 2015 to reach 100% ownership, and there has been no reported ownership change since.
Is Riot Games laying people off in 2026?
Yes. Riot laid off about 80 employees, roughly half the 2XKO fighting-game team, in February 2026, just weeks after that title's console launch, following a January 2024 cut of 530 jobs (about 11% of staff).
Could AI replace Riot Games's core business?
Unlikely for League of Legends or Valorant, whose value rests on 15-plus years of ranked ladders, anti-cheat infrastructure, and esports rights. AI is used for marketing content, but a generative-AI Wild Rift trailer in August 2025 drew fan backlash.
Who is Riot Games's biggest competitor?
Valve is the most active mindshare threat: Counter-Strike 2 overtook League of Legends as the most-watched esports title in H1 2026 per Esports Charts, driven by a 2.75 million peak-viewer IEM Cologne Major.
Is 2XKO succeeding for Riot Games?
No signs of it yet. 2XKO fully launched on consoles January 20, 2026, fell off PlayStation's top-downloads chart within its first month, and Riot cut about 80 of the game's developers in February 2026.
