The call

Rocket Lawyer has a real regulatory wedge in Arizona but flat headcount, no fresh capital since 2021, and an interim CEO leave it exposed to a much larger LegalZoom and to free AI drafting tools.

Rocket Lawyer lets people create legal documents online, some with help from real lawyers using AI tools. The company has one real advantage: a special license from Arizona that lets it offer lawyer-backed AI services in a way that pure AI apps like ChatGPT and pure law firms cannot legally do. However, LegalZoom is ten times bigger and can probably copy this same license, while free AI tools are already taking over the simple document-writing business that used to be Rocket Lawyer's bread and butter. The key question is whether this Arizona advantage spreads to other states before LegalZoom copies it, and whether the company can find a permanent leader and get back to growing.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other general-purpose AI chatbots. Free chatbots now draft basic contracts and wills, pulling users away from Rocket Lawyer's self-serve document tier. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: LegalZoom. LegalZoom runs a live online legal services business about 10 times Rocket Lawyer's size and holds the top US market share. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Its Arizona ABS license lets a licensed law firm subsidiary pair AI drafting with real attorney sign-off, a combination plain chatbots and most rivals cannot legally offer yet.
What would change this call
Rocket Lawyer names a permanent CEO to replace interim CEO Paul Hollerbach. Would show leadership stability and a resolved strategic direction.
Arizona ABS attorney-ownership license expands to additional states within a year. Would show the regulatory moat widening before LegalZoom can copy it.
LegalZoom or another rival files for an ABS-style attorney-ownership license. Would show the moat being replicated and narrowing Rocket Lawyer's edge.

Could AI replace Rocket Lawyer?
