Rocket Pool
Decentralized protocol letting anyone stake ETH permissionlessly and earn rETH rewards.
Rocket Pool still runs real infrastructure with loyal operators, but its token stopped capturing value right as Lido and custodial rivals pull further ahead.
Rocket Pool is a system that lets regular people and small operators stake Ethereum (lock up coins to help run the network and earn rewards) instead of only big companies doing it. It is hard to copy because it has 1,500 spread-out operators in 70 countries all working together, but Lido dominates the market with 50 times more money locked in, and even Lido itself is now copying Rocket Pool's open approach. The biggest question is whether Rocket Pool's plan to make money by taking a small fee from staking rewards will actually work well enough to make the RPL token valuable, since the old way of forcing people to buy RPL tokens no longer exists.
Size of ETH fee-switch payouts to staked RPL holders over the next few quarters. Shows whether the new ~9% fee-switch revenue model replaces the demand lost from removing mandatory RPL bonding.
Growth or stagnation of Lido's Community Staking Module operator count through 2026. Shows whether Lido is absorbing the permissionless-operator demand Rocket Pool relies on.
- Rocket Pool TVL ~$1B
- Market share only 3.67% of LST category
- RPL market cap just ~$41M
- Saturn's removal of mandatory RPL bonding may have killed the token's main demand sink, leaving an unproven fee-switch model.
- Short-term softening in rETH supply, minipool count, and node operator count flagged in late June 2026.
- Saturn 3 (sub-1 ETH minipools, insurance fund, Pectra support) still unshipped as of mid-2026, carrying execution and audit risk.
- Small ~3.67% category share leaves limited buffer against Lido's dominant, still-growing curated model.
- MiCA enforcement from 2026-07-01 could reshape institutional preference for or against permissionless staking.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Lido Finance | losing to | Lido held ~50-62% LST share vs Rocket Pool's ~3.67% as of 2026-06-23 |
| Binance wBETH | contesting | Exchange LST held ~3.7M ETH staked (as of 2026-05-28), fragmenting non-Lido demand |

- Is Rocket Pool profitable?
- Rocket Pool the protocol takes no direct fee itself, but its Saturn 1 upgrade, live since 2026-02-18, activated a fee switch on 2026-07-12 routing about 9% of protocol revenue to staked RPL holders in ETH, replacing prior inflationary token emissions as the value model.
- Who owns Rocket Pool?
- No single owner exists. Rocket Pool is a token-governed DAO; a private Australian entity, Rocket Pool Pty Ltd, stewards development and holds only ordinary node-operator voting rights, per a token transparency filing dated 2026-05-12. RPL was distributed via presale, crowdsale, and team reserve at launch.
- Could AI replace Rocket Pool?
- No. Validator security, ETH custody, and consensus participation are not knowledge-work tasks AI displaces. Rocket Pool instead shipped 'rocketpool-skills' AI-agent tooling in a 2026-05-07 roadmap update, letting AI agents interact with its contracts as a distribution feature, not a threat.
- Who is Rocket Pool's biggest competitor?
- Lido Finance, which held roughly 50 to 62% of the Ethereum liquid staking category (about $19B stETH TVL as of 2026-03-16) versus Rocket Pool's approximately 3.67% share as of 2026-06-23, making Lido the dominant incumbent Rocket Pool competes against.
- Is it safe to become a Rocket Pool node operator?
- It's permissionless with no whitelisting. Post-Saturn 1 (launched 2026-02-18), the bond requirement dropped to 4 ETH from 8 ETH, and as of 2026-04-26 roughly 1,523 operators across 70 countries were running about 18,819 active or pending minipools.
- Is RPL token undervalued?
- By one vendor's own claim, RPL's market cap was roughly $41M as of 2026-07-20 against roughly $900M to $1.02B in protocol TVL, an undervaluation narrative that gained attention after the Saturn 1 fee switch went live on 2026-07-12 and RPL jumped 27% that week.
- 2026-07-12Saturn 1 fee switch goes live, routing about 9% of protocol revenue to staked RPL in ETH

- 2026-05-0760,160 ETH staked via Saturn 1 megapools; rocketpool-skills AI-agent tooling shipped
