Rocksteady Studios
UK studio behind Batman: Arkham games, owned by Warner Bros. Games.
Rocksteady's fate rests on a Paramount Skydance decision about an unannounced Batman project, not on anything the studio controls itself.
Rocksteady Studios makes video games, mostly superhero games like Batman and Suicide Squad, but gets told what to make by its parent company Warner Bros. Discovery. The problem is that any big company can make Batman games if they own the rights, so Rocksteady's only real protection is that Warner Bros. happens to own the Batman license and chose them. But the company's last major game flopped badly in 2024, most of its experienced creators left, and now Warner Bros. is being bought by a different company called Paramount Skydance, which could decide to move Rocksteady's next Batman project to cheaper studios instead. The one thing that could save Rocksteady is if Paramount Skydance officially announces and greenlighs Rocksteady's upcoming single-player Batman game; without that announcement, the new owners will probably give the work to other studios they already own.
Official greenlight and announcement of Rocksteady's next Batman project. Would show parent still trusts Rocksteady with flagship IP.
Another layoff round or further senior staff departures at Rocksteady. Would show continued erosion of the studio's core team.
- Headcount fell from 253 to 214, 2021-2024
- $200M EBITDA hit from Suicide Squad flop
- Profits dropped 57% after Suicide Squad
- Parent Warner Bros. Discovery mid-acquisition by Paramount Skydance, ownership and strategy unresolved.
- Next unannounced Batman project is years from release with no official greenlight confirmed.
- Repeated layoffs (Sept 2024, year-end 2024) and senior talent departures reduce delivery capacity.
- Sibling studio TT Games now leads Batman franchise output, risking further marginalization of Rocksteady.
- AI-driven compression of QA, localization and asset pipelines could further shrink headcount.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| TT Games | losing to | TT Games led LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, May 2026, with Rocksteady only in support role |
| Monolith Productions | contesting | Sibling studio's Wonder Woman game reportedly cancelled amid same 2026 WB instability, precedent for Rocksteady risk |
| Hundred Star Games | losing to | Founded January 2024 by departed Rocksteady co-founders Jamie Walker and Sefton Hill |
| Secret of Circadia (indie project) | losing to | Absorbed departed senior Suicide Squad developers including Axel Rydby, reported July 2026 |
| WB Games Montreal | contesting | Sibling WB studio also holds Batman development history, alternative destination for franchise work |
- Is Rocksteady Studios still working on a Batman game?
- Yes, Rocksteady is reportedly developing an unannounced single-player Batman-related project that Bloomberg's Jason Schreier said in May 2026 is still 'years away' from release. No official title or release date has been confirmed by Warner Bros. Games as of July 2026.
- Did Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League flop for Rocksteady?
- Yes. The February 2024 live-service title got mixed reviews and low sustained player counts. Warner Bros. Discovery disclosed a $200 million negative EBITDA hit in Q1 2024 tied to its underperformance, and Rocksteady ended live-service support entirely in January 2025.
- Has Rocksteady Studios had layoffs?
- Yes, two rounds in 2024. A September 2024 layoff cut the QA team roughly in half, and a year-end 2024 round hit programming, art, and further QA staff. Headcount fell from about 253 in December 2021 to 214 by end of 2024.
- Who owns Rocksteady Studios?
- Rocksteady is a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Games, majority-acquired by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in February 2010. As of July 2026, parent Warner Bros. Discovery is itself being acquired by Paramount Skydance in a $110.9 billion deal announced February 27, 2026.
- Could AI replace Rocksteady Studios' game developers?
- Not core creative direction, but QA testing, localization, and asset generation are increasingly AI-touched industry-wide as of a December 2025 retrospective. Rocksteady's QA department already suffered the heaviest 2024 layoffs, making it a visible area of ongoing headcount vulnerability.
- Who is Rocksteady Studios' biggest competitor?
- Within Warner Bros. Games, sibling studio TT Games is now the more active Batman-adjacent developer, having led LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight (May 2026) with Rocksteady in a support role. Sibling studio Monolith Productions had its Wonder Woman game reportedly cancelled amid the same 2026 instability.
