The call

RTL still leads German TV and owns real content and distribution rights, but linear decline and streamer inroads with young viewers keep the picture unsettled.

RTL Group owns and operates television networks, production studios, and streaming services across Europe. It is hard to replace because it has broadcast licenses that governments control, sports rights that fans want, and shows it owns outright, plus contracts with phone companies locked in through 2030. However, Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+ are pulling younger viewers away from traditional TV to streaming, and RTL's core ad-supported linear TV business shrank 3.8% last year. The key question is whether RTL's new streaming service can grow fast enough and profitably enough to offset the decline of old-school TV before Bertelsmann (which owns 75% of the company) loses patience or the rights it depends on expire or become too expensive to renew.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI content and production tools. AI mostly cuts Fremantle's production costs today; longer term it could copy and cheapen the show formats it sells. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Netflix and Amazon already lead RTL+ among younger German viewers, chipping at the audience RTL needs for ad and streaming growth. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Broadcast licenses, exclusive sports rights, owned IP via Fremantle, and telco distribution deals locked in to 2030.
What would change this call
RTL Group's H1 2026 results (Aug 11, 2026) show streaming subs below 12.5m post-Sky consolidation. Would show the streaming pivot is losing momentum against Netflix/Amazon.
Fremantle's 2026 revenue fails to recover toward its 9% margin target after the 9.4% 2025 decline. Would show content production arm still losing ground in US/UK markets.
RTL Deutschland's lead over ProSiebenSat.1 in the 14-59 demo narrows below the 7.2pp reported in Q1 2026. Would show domestic audience share slipping to rivals or streamers.

Questions people ask
Is RTL Group profitable?
Yes. RTL Group reported FY2025 Adjusted EBITA of €661 million (11.0% margin) and total Group profit of €1.028 billion, though the latter was boosted by the RTL Nederland sale, per results published March 12, 2026.
Who owns RTL Group?
Bertelsmann AG holds approximately 75% of RTL Group's shares, with RTL Group holding about 2.3% in treasury and roughly 22.8% in free float, according to data as of July 24, 2026. Bertelsmann first took majority control in 2001.
Is RTL Group losing to Netflix and Amazon?
Partially. As of July 8, 2026 reporting, Amazon Prime Video already leads RTL+ among some younger German demographics, even as RTL+ overall viewing hours grew. Linear ad dollars keep migrating to global streamers despite RTL's domestic broadcast lead.
Could AI replace RTL Group's content production?
Not fully. RTL deploys over 100 AI use cases (as of March 2026) and launched an 'agentic AI' strategy on March 27, 2026 for production and marketing, but the company frames AI as a cost tool protected by its owned IP, exclusive rights, and broadcast licenses, not a substitute for them.
Has RTL Group had layoffs?
Yes. Third-party reporting cites roughly 600 job cuts in Germany announced in December 2025 amid TV advertising market pressure, alongside a lowered 2025 profit outlook in November 2025. Overall reported headcount still rose to 15,768 by end of FY2025.
Who is RTL Group's biggest competitor?
Domestically, ProSiebenSat1 in Germany, where RTL led by 7.2 percentage points in the 14-59 demographic in Q1 2026. Globally, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ are eroding linear viewing and streaming attention across Europe.
