Runtime
Middleware to build and run internal coding agents without infra work.
Runtime is a small governance layer for coding agents arriving just as Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, AWS, and Cognition ship native versions of the same thing.
Runtime makes middleware, a middleman layer, that lets companies manage and monitor AI coding agents from different companies in one place. It is easy to copy because the big AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are already shipping their own control features directly into their products, and cloud companies like AWS and Google are doing the same. The one specific thing that could save Runtime is if it becomes the only safe choice for banks, hospitals, or government agencies that legally cannot trust one vendor with their code, but that product does not exist yet. In 12 to 18 months, either Runtime proves that regulated companies will pay for neutral, self-hosted control, or the big companies will have made Runtime unnecessary.
Runtime narrows public positioning to BYOC/audit-as-system-of-record vs staying broad on 'YC scaleup governance'. Would show Runtime is defending its one differentiated niche instead of the commoditized middle.
Adoption rate of Claude Code Routines and Codex Automations among Runtime's target buyers over the next year. Would show how fast frontier labs are commoditizing Runtime's orchestration layer.
- $1M total funding raised
- Two person founding team as of launch
- Product Hunt debut: #5 of day, 266 upvotes
- Frontier labs natively shipping governance/orchestration features that commoditize Runtime's core product.
- No named, verified enterprise logos beyond an anonymized fintech unicorn claim.
- Tiny two-founder team still hiring its first engineer amid a crowded, better-funded competitive field.
- Unproven BYOC/compliance moat remains the only unbuilt differentiator against well-capitalized rivals.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic (Claude Code Routines) | losing to | Shipped native automation/scheduling mid-2026, replicating Runtime's orchestration layer |
| OpenAI (Codex Automations) | losing to | Shipped native automation feature mid-2026, overlapping Runtime's core function |
| Google (GKE Agent Sandbox) / AWS (Lambda MicroVMs) | losing to | Both shipped native agent sandboxing by July 2026, per industry comparison |
| Cognition Labs (Devin) | gaining on | Acquired Windsurf in Jul 2025, integrating into Devin Cloud through 2026 |
| Runta | contesting | Raised $20M a16z-led seed at over $100M valuation in adjacent agent-governance niche, Jul 2026 |
- Is Runtime profitable in 2026?
- No revenue or profitability figures have been disclosed. Runtime is a YC P26 accelerator company with a two-person founding team (CEO Gus Trigos, CTO Carlos) as of April 2026, still hiring its first Founding Engineer in May 2026 and offering only vendor-claimed customer traction.
- Could AI replace Runtime's product?
- Largely yes. Anthropic shipped native Claude Code Routines and OpenAI shipped Codex Automations in mid-2026, replicating the scheduling and orchestration features Runtime built its middleware layer around, directly threatening its core value proposition.
- Who are Runtime's biggest competitors?
- Devin/Cognition Labs (which acquired Windsurf in July 2025 and is building Devin Cloud), plus Tembo, Factory, Ona, Amp, 8090, and sandbox infra players like E2B, Daytona and Modal, according to a June 2026 market comparison report.
- Who owns Runtime?
- Runtime is privately held by its founders, Gus Trigos (CEO) and Carlos (CTO), with accelerator backing from Y Combinator and Batch Ventures as of an April 2026 funding record; no priced seed round or outside majority owner has been disclosed.
- Does Runtime have real paying enterprise customers?
- Runtime says (vendor-claimed) it is live with fast-growing YC scaleups and a 'fintech unicorn' customer, per an April 2026 Hacker News launch post, but no named enterprise logos or independently verified customer count exist as of mid-2026.
- What is Runtime's pricing model?
- Founders confirmed in an April 2026 launch post that Runtime charges a flat platform fee plus underlying compute cost, with no markup on model or token usage, and offers a free tier alongside a self-hostable BYOC enterprise option.
