The call

Safe sits on top of the market's biggest pile of wallets and volume, but turning that into real fee revenue, and staying relevant once AI agents start signing their own transactions, is still an open question.

Safe builds software that lets groups of people jointly control cryptocurrency wallets, and has attracted 61 million accounts and 1.4 trillion dollars in transaction volume at major organizations and groups. The reason it has been hard to replace is that institutions trust Safe's setup and its standards have become the default way DAOs manage treasuries, but this advantage is getting weaker: Coinbase, traditional finance firms like Fireblocks, and MetaMask have all launched competing products in the past year, and a bigger threat is emerging from new payment standards that let automated AI agents bypass the human approval step that Safe's entire design depends on. The one thing that could save Safe's business is whether it can either build its own AI-agent wallet product or acquire one in the next year or so, and whether it can turn its massive user base into actual revenue through transaction fees on its planned Safenet network, because right now Safe makes only 10 million dollars a year despite the massive scale, and its own token lost 95 percent of its value.

Why
01
AI pressure: Agent payment standards like x402, Google AP2, and Open Wallet Standard. These let AI agents move funds without human multisig review, the exact workflow Safe's whole business is built on approving. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Coinbase Smart Wallet on Base, plus MetaMask Smart Account. Coinbase and Consensys ship their own smart accounts on their own chains, cutting Safe out of new wallet deployments. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 61 million existing accounts and $1.4 trillion in processed volume make Safe the default DAO and treasury standard, hard to migrate off.
What would change this call
Safe ships or acquires a Safe-native agent-wallet product within 12-18 months. Shows Safe can extend its multisig moat into agent-driven payments rather than being bypassed.
Safenet mainnet generates transaction fees beyond April 2026 Beta without token subsidies. Shows Safe can convert its account scale into durable, non-subsidized revenue.
x402 or AP2 becomes default payment rail on major dapps with a non-Safe wallet as reference implementation. Would show agent-payment standards routing around Safe's human-review workflow.
Key numbers
  • 61.1M accounts, up from 18.3M added in 2025 (2026-04-23)
  • $10M ARR in 2025, up from ~$2M end-2024 (2026-02-03)
  • SAFE token down 95% to $0.08 from $2.70 peak (2026-07-20)
Named risks
  • Core multisig workflow could be bypassed by agent-payment standards (x402, AP2) automating transactions. Severity: high
  • Monetization remains weak relative to scale, with only $10M ARR against $1.4T cumulative volume. Severity: high
  • SAFE token down over 95% from peak, undermining Safenet validator incentive economics. Severity: medium
  • Frontend signing UI remains an attack surface, as shown by the $1.4-1.5B Bybit hack in Feb 2025. Severity: high
  • Small core team (~4 Foundation employees) and falling job postings could limit execution speed. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Safe (Safe{Wallet}) profitable in 2026?
Not yet. Safe crossed $10M in annualized revenue in 2025 (up from ~$2M end-2024) and is targeting break-even and a revenue doubling in 2026, with a longer-term goal of $100M ARR by 2030, per a February 3, 2026 Cointelegraph report citing co-founder Lukas Schor.
How big is Safe's user base compared to its revenue?
Safe reported 61.11M total smart accounts and $1.4 trillion in cumulative transaction volume as of April 23, 2026, yet only about $10M in annualized revenue for 2025, showing a large gap between usage scale and monetization.
Could AI agents replace Safe's multisig wallets?
Possibly a threat: agent-payment standards like x402, Google's AP2, and MoonPay's Open Wallet Standard (launched March 23, 2026) are built to automate transactions and bypass the human multisig review that is Safe's core workflow, per a June 13, 2026 industry report.
Who is Safe's biggest competitor?
Coinbase Smart Wallet and MetaMask Smart Account are the most direct rivals in smart-account wallets, while emerging agent-payment standards (x402, AP2) threaten to route around Safe's multisig model entirely, per 2026 competitive analyses.
What happened to the SAFE token price?
The SAFE token traded around $0.08 in July 2026, down more than 95% from its April 2024 high of about $2.70, giving it a market cap of roughly $60M and a fully diluted valuation of $80-100M, per Coinbase and Tokenomist data.
Was Safe hacked in the Bybit incident?
Safe's core smart contracts were not compromised, but its Safe{Wallet} frontend signing UI was exploited in the February 2025 Bybit hack, which resulted in $1.4-1.5 billion stolen, the largest crypto theft in history, per Safe's own February 28, 2025 statement.
