The call

Sakura holds the paperwork that keeps foreign clouds out of Japan's government AI work, but its profit swing still depends on GPU capex paying off before SoftBank's own launch lands.

Sakura Internet runs data centers in Japan and just won major government cloud contracts plus billions in AI computer subsidies from the Japanese government. It is hard to copy because Japanese law requires that sensitive data stay inside Japan, which keeps American cloud giants like AWS and Microsoft out of government work, and Sakura got there first with all the required approvals. The real threat is SoftBank, a Japanese rival also building AI computers for the same customers, launching this fall. If SoftBank wins government business or if Sakura's Microsoft partnership falls apart or delays, the company's sky-high stock price (trading at 90 times earnings) leaves no room for disappointment.

Why
01
AI pressure: AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud AI services. AI demand is filling Sakura's GPUs, but hyperscaler AI clouds could pull enterprise workloads outside the sovereign/government lane they're barred from. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: SoftBank Corp. SoftBank is building its own GB200 NVL72 AI infrastructure, targeting commercial launch in October 2026, aimed at the same domestic GPU market. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Japan's data-residency law and METI's economic-security policy keep foreign hyperscalers out of Government Cloud work, and Sakura is the only fully certified domestic provider there.
What would change this call
SoftBank Corp's GB200 AI infrastructure commercial launch, targeted October 2026. Tests whether a same-country rival can pull public-sector or GPU-cloud customers from Sakura.
Microsoft/SoftBank partnership finalized with explicit revenue-share and booking terms. Confirms whether the deal that lifted Sakura's stock 20% becomes real committed business.
H1 FY3/2027 results due late October 2026 versus the raised guidance of ¥2.2B operating profit. Shows whether Sakura's GPU capex J-curve is turning to profit as claimed.
Key numbers
  • FY3/2026 operating loss of ¥403 million on GPU buildout costs (2026-03-31)
  • Microsoft plans $10B Japan AI investment tied to Sakura/SoftBank deal (2026-04-03)
  • H1 FY3/2027 operating profit guidance raised to ¥2.2B from ¥650M (2026-07-28)
Named risks
  • Stock trades near 90x trailing P/E as of July 29, 2026 with little room for earnings misses. Severity: high
  • Microsoft/SoftBank partnership terms, including revenue-share, remained unfinalized as of April 21, 2026. Severity: high
  • Government Cloud revenue not expected until fiscal year starting April 2027, delaying certification payoff. Severity: medium
  • SoftBank's October 2026 GPU launch could take public-sector and enterprise share from Sakura. Severity: medium
  • Large planned GPU buildout (8,000 more H100s plus new Hokkaido site by 2027) faces construction and commissioning slippage risk. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Sakura Internet in financial trouble?
Sakura Internet is not in acute trouble but its numbers show real strain: FY3/2026 net sales rose 12.4% YoY to Y35,301M, yet net profit fell 92.6% YoY to just Y216M as of 2026-04-26. Legacy hosting revenue dropped 7.2% while GPU cloud grew 20.3%, and margin compression from global hyperscalers pushed the GPU business into an operating loss that management guides to turn into a Y1,500M profit in FY3/2027.
Who are Sakura Internet's biggest competitors?
The most direct commercial threat comes from global hyperscalers AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, which already undercut Sakura on GPU pricing, though Japanese law bars them from the Government Cloud contract Sakura holds as of 2026-03-27. The bigger strategic risk is domestic: rivals like SoftBank, NTT, and Fujitsu face no nationality restriction and could pursue the same sovereign cloud certification, with SoftBank in particular holding broader Microsoft, Arm, and OpenAI relationships.
Is Sakura Internet at risk from AI?
No, AI is a demand driver rather than a threat for Sakura Internet, since AI compute needs are what feed its GPU rental orders rather than replacing its hosting or cloud services. This is reflected in its GPU infrastructure segment growing 20.3% YoY in FY3/2026 and in its designation as a Microsoft AI compute partner on 2026-04-03.
What gives Sakura Internet its edge?
Sakura Internet became Japan's sole certified sovereign cloud vendor for Government Cloud on 2026-03-27, a status that foreign hyperscalers like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud are structurally barred from under nationality rules. It also secured a Microsoft AI compute partner designation on 2026-04-03, giving it a protected government revenue stream that most competitors cannot access.
Could a big tech company copy Sakura Internet's advantage?
Foreign hyperscalers cannot copy the Government Cloud certification itself due to Japanese nationality rules, but domestic players are not blocked. Companies like NTT, Fujitsu, and SoftBank could pursue the same sovereign cloud certification, and this domestic-copy risk is a more credible threat to Sakura's protected niche than any move by AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
What should I watch next for Sakura Internet?
Sakura's Q1 FY3/2027 earnings, expected around 2026-07-28, should show whether its GPU operating loss is narrowing toward the Y1,500M full-year profit guidance issued alongside FY3/2026 results. A second marker to check is whether Sakura discloses a signed revenue contract from its Microsoft partnership by 2026-12, which would clarify how much upside the April 2026 partner designation actually carries.
