The call

Samsara's hardware and compliance lock-in hold for now, but Geotab's independent ranking lead and unshipped OEM telematics plans are the two things worth watching.

Samsara makes dashcams, GPS boxes, and cloud software that truck and delivery fleets use to track vehicles, driver behavior, and safety. The company is hard to replace because fleets have physically installed Samsara hardware in their vehicles and depend on the software to meet government trucking rules, but Geotab is ranked the top competitor and Motive is another strong rival fighting for the same customers. The one thing that could change everything is if Ford, GM, or other carmakers build their own fleet tracking systems directly into new vehicles, which would let companies bypass buying Samsara's hardware and software altogether, though most fleets still use mixed-brand vehicles so this threat remains uncertain.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI models can't reach the physical sensor data or hardware install base that runs this business, so they feed Samsara's own product instead of eating it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Geotab, plus possible Ford/GM/Navistar OEM-native telematics. Geotab already ranks above Samsara in ABI Research 2025 with 4.6M+ connected vehicles; automakers building fleet software could skip third-party gateways entirely. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Installed dashcams and gateways tied to regulated ELD/DVIR compliance workflows make ripping out the hardware costly and legally risky.
What would change this call
ABI Research or similar independent ranking again places Geotab ahead of Samsara in 2026-2027. Would show Geotab pulling ahead in market leadership, not just parity.
Ford, GM, or Navistar ship a cross-brand OEM-native fleet telematics platform. Would show OEMs bypassing third-party hardware like Samsara's dashcams/gateways.
Samsara's $1M+ ACV deal count or ARR growth falls below 25% in FY2027 quarterly reports. Would show large-deal momentum slowing versus current 30% growth trend.
Key numbers
  • Q1 FY27 ARR $1.991B, up 30% YoY (2026-05-02)
  • 190 customers now spend $1M+ in ARR (2026-05-02)
  • FY27 guidance implies growth slowing to ~24% (2026-06-04)
Named risks
  • OEMs (Ford, GM, Navistar) could ship native cross-fleet telematics bypassing third-party hardware layer. Severity: medium
  • Unresolved Motive litigation (patent suit, trade secrets) may extend past August 2027. Severity: medium
  • AI ARR and net-new bookings figures are vendor-claimed and not independently verified by analysts. Severity: medium
  • Co-founder insider stock sales in February 2026 could signal reduced confidence, though routine. Severity: low
  • Stock volatility around earnings despite beats, per 52-week range of $23.38-$47.47. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Samsara profitable in 2026?
Yes. Samsara posted GAAP EPS of $0.08 in Q1 FY2027 (quarter ended May 2, 2026), its third consecutive quarter of GAAP profitability, after narrowing FY2026 net loss to just -$9.1 million on $1.62 billion revenue.
Who is Samsara's biggest competitor?
Geotab, a privately held Canadian telematics firm, was ranked #1 overall ahead of Samsara in ABI Research's 2025 Commercial Telematics Competitive Ranking, citing its open platform, 4.6 million+ connected vehicles, and 430+ integrations, as of February 2025.
Could AI replace Samsara?
Unlikely soon. Samsara's moat rests on proprietary sensor data from installed hardware (25 trillion data points captured in 2025) and federally mandated ELD/DVIR compliance workflows that AI models cannot replicate without physical dashcams and gateways already deployed in customer fleets.
Who owns Samsara?
Samsara is a public company (NYSE: IOT) with no controlling parent, having IPO'd December 15, 2021 at $23/share raising $805 million; pre-IPO backers included Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, Tiger Global, and Warburg Pincus.
Is Samsara losing to Geotab?
Not clearly. Geotab was ranked #1 by ABI Research in February 2025 ahead of Samsara's #2 spot, but Samsara continues growing ARR 30% YoY to $1.991 billion (May 2026) with no reported customer churn evidence of losing share to Geotab.
What is Samsara's revenue growth rate?
Samsara's FY2026 revenue (ended January 31, 2026) was $1.62 billion, up 29.6% YoY; Q1 FY2027 revenue reached $478.8 million, up 31% YoY, with FY2027 guidance of $2.005-2.013 billion, about 24% projected growth.
