The call

SMC's beer, fuel, and airport assets sit behind government contracts and physical scale that are hard to copy, but a $15 billion airport bet and ₱701 billion in debt mean the real test is financial, not technological.

San Miguel makes beer, refines oil, packages goods, and runs airport terminals across the Philippines, earning steady cash from assets competitors would take years to build or obtain government permission to operate. The real danger is not being replaced but running out of cash: the company borrowed ₱701 billion to fund a ₱15 billion ($15 billion) new airport project in Bulacan while older debt matures in 2027, and it is facing environmental lawsuits and a government investigation into its current airport contract that could delay or shrink returns on that huge bet. If refinancing costs stay high or Bulacan's airport permit gets delayed or reduced, the company's ability to pay investors could tighten sharply, even though its day-to-day business of selling beer and fuel remains hard to dislodge.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. SMC's business runs on breweries, refineries, and airport concrete, not software, so AI has no direct path to displacing it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Aboitiz InfraCapital (regional airport concessions); Asia Brewery/AB Heineken Philippines (beer). Aboitiz is expanding into airport and infrastructure concessions while Asia Brewery keeps chipping at SMC's beer share as the long-running #2. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Government-granted concessions (NAIA, Bulacan), refining licenses, and beer distribution networks that take years and political capital to duplicate.

Could AI replace San Miguel Corporation's business?
No. SMC's core operations, brewing, refining, packaging, and airport concessions, are physical and government-licensed assets AI cannot replicate. SMC uses AI only for internal analytics; in September 2025 it warned of AI deepfake scams impersonating CEO Ramon Ang to defraud the public.
Who is San Miguel Corporation's biggest beer competitor?
Asia Brewery Inc. is SMC's long-time domestic #2 beer player, with decades of trademark litigation between the two companies documented in Philippine court records; SMC has retained market leadership throughout.
What is happening with San Miguel's Bulacan airport project?
SMC's $15 billion New Manila International Airport (NMIA) in Bulacan targets 2028 completion; DOTr approved its detailed engineering design in mid-2026, though Global Witness raised Manila Bay reclamation concerns in a January 2025 report.
Will San Miguel sell Petron to the Philippine government?
It's unresolved. Ramon Ang revived an offer in March 2026 to sell Petron, SMC's fuel and refining arm, to the state amid an energy crunch, but no sale had been finalized as of the July 2026 reporting.
