The call

SAP's hold on enterprise data and compliance workflows keeps customers in place, even as investors punish the stock for its heavy AI spending against Oracle.

SAP sells software that stores and runs all of a company's most important data: money, inventory, taxes, and supplier relationships. It is hard to switch away because the data is locked in, laws require it to stay put, and millions of suppliers are plugged into SAP's network. The main rivals are Oracle, Microsoft, and Workday, but none of them can easily pull out a company's ten years of records. The one thing to watch: in 2027, older SAP systems stop getting support, which will force customers to either move to SAP's newer version or jump ship to a competitor. If most stay, SAP wins for years. If a big customer leaves, the lock-in story starts to crack.

Why
01
AI pressure: General-purpose LLMs like Claude and GPT-4. Anthropic's Claude now runs inside SAP's Joule agents, working on customer data it cannot reach outside SAP's apps. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Workday. Rivals court customers migrating off ECC by 2027, but no named-account defections have shown up in SAP's numbers yet. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Mission-critical operational data, embedded tax and compliance rules, and Ariba's 1M+ supplier network keep customers locked in.

Quarterly S/4HANA net-new logo counts and named large-customer defections through 2027. Shows whether ECC customers are migrating to SAP cloud or leaving for Oracle, Microsoft, or Workday.
Outcome of the Teradata US antitrust trial around April 2026. An adverse ruling could force structural remedies weakening SAP's data lock-in moat.
SAP's Q2 2026 earnings (due July 23, 2026) cloud revenue growth vs. consensus ~$11.4B. Confirms whether cloud growth deceleration is temporary or a structural slowdown.

Questions people ask
Is SAP profitable in 2026?
Yes. SAP reported FY2025 revenue of €36.8 billion (+7.68% YoY) with net income between €7.16 and €7.3 billion, and FY2026 guidance calls for non-IFRS operating profit of €11.9 to €12.3 billion, per its April 23, 2026 quarterly statement.
Could AI replace SAP's ERP software?
Unlikely near-term. General-purpose LLMs handle structured enterprise data poorly, and SAP has embedded Anthropic's Claude inside its own Joule agents (May 12, 2026) rather than being disintermediated, while building proprietary tabular models via its Prior Labs acquisition, completed July 17, 2026.
Is SAP laying off workers in 2026?
SAP restricted hiring and travel spending company-wide starting July 3, 2026 to fund AI investment, following a leadership reorg moving AI development under CEO Christian Klein, though total headcount rose to about 109,211 by end-2025 versus 107,155 in 2024.
Who is SAP's biggest competitor?
Oracle's Fusion Cloud ERP is SAP's closest ERP rival, with one 2025 estimate suggesting Oracle may have surpassed SAP in vendor revenue share, though this figure is methodology-dependent and flagged as inconsistent across sources as of July 9, 2026.
Who owns SAP SE?
SAP SE is an independent publicly traded German company with no controlling parent, listed on the Frankfurt exchange since 1988 and on the NYSE since 1998 under ticker SAP, led by CEO Christian Klein since 2019/2020.
What is SAP's 2027 ECC deadline and why does it matter?
Mainstream support for SAP's older ECC ERP system ends in 2027 (extended maintenance to 2030); as of Q4 2024 only about 39% of ECC customers had migrated to S/4HANA, per Gartner data cited July 9, 2026, making this migration window a key business driver.
