The call

A subscale satellite operator with real hardware and defense ties, betting its future on an unflown constellation and a widening gap against a far bigger rival.

Satellogic builds and operates Earth-observation satellites that take pictures from space for military and government customers. The company owns real satellites in orbit and has U.S. government approval to sell to defense agencies, which a pure software company cannot easily copy, but Planet Labs is 14 times larger, makes money, and already sells similar satellites to the same customers. Satellogic's big test is whether it can launch its main new satellite constellation called Merlin in October 2026 without running out of cash, and whether it can convert its pipeline of promised defense deals into real revenue before Planet Labs locks up the market.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Satellogic sells AI-tagged imagery as a feature, it does not face an AI product eating its imagery business today. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Planet Labs PBC. Planet Labs runs a live, much larger constellation with $906M backlog versus Satellogic's $65M, competing for the same government buyers. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Orbital assets already in space plus US defense-eligible status after redomiciliation, which software rivals cannot copy quickly.
What would change this call
Merlin constellation's first launch occurs on or near the October 2026 target. Shows whether Satellogic can execute its flagship hardware plan on schedule.
Q2 2026 earnings (August 5, 2026) show operating cash flow still positive and revenue growth near 80%. Tests whether Q1 2026's cash-flow turn was durable or a one-quarter anomaly.
The $30M, $80M, $18M, and $12M announced deals convert into signed backlog above $100M within a year. Indicates whether announced defense pipeline becomes real revenue narrowing the gap with Planet Labs.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue $17.7M vs Planet Labs ~$73M per quarter (2025-12-31)
  • Backlog $65.1M vs Planet Labs $906M (2025-12-31)
  • Cash $121.9M, up from $22.5M a year earlier (2026-03-31)
Named risks
  • Merlin constellation first launch (Oct 2026) could slip given prior satellite deployment delays. Severity: high
  • Cash burn continues to require dilutive equity raises ($90M Oct 2025, $35M Jan 2026). Severity: medium
  • CFO Rick Dunn departure (June 2026) creates leadership gap during defense pivot execution. Severity: medium
  • Subscale backlog ($65.1M) versus incumbents like Planet Labs ($906M) limits negotiating leverage on defense deals. Severity: high

Questions people ask
Is Satellogic profitable in 2026?
Not yet. FY2025 Adjusted EBITDA loss was $17.4 million, though Q1 2026 (reported May 11, 2026) showed revenue of $6.1 million, up 80% YoY, and the company's first-ever positive net cash from operating activities.
Who is Satellogic's biggest competitor?
Planet Labs PBC. As of July 16, 2026, Planet's single-quarter revenue reached $73.4 million and its backlog exceeded $906 million, versus Satellogic's $65.1 million total backlog as of December 31, 2025.
Has Satellogic had layoffs?
Yes. It cut about 34 employees (13% of staff) in May 2024, then 70 more in June 2024 citing slower satellite deployment. Headcount later rose to 154 by December 31, 2025 as the defense sales push expanded.
Could AI replace Satellogic's business?
No. Satellogic's core moat is physical orbital hardware and US defense-eligible status gained via its March 2025 Delaware redomiciliation, not software. It layers AI (Palantir, SynMax, SpaceKnow partnerships through mid-2026) atop imagery but the satellites themselves are the barrier.
Is Satellogic diluting shareholders?
Yes. It raised $90 million in a public offering completed October 2025 and $35 million at $4.73 a share in January 2026, while still posting a $17.4 million Adjusted EBITDA loss for FY2025, ended December 31, 2025.
When is Satellogic's Merlin constellation launching?
Satellogic targeted the first Merlin satellite launch for October 2026, with full operational capability by H1 2027, per its March 18, 2026 announcement describing Merlin as an AI-first, one-meter daily-remapping system.
