The call

Seer's technology still beats Olink on protein count, but shrinking revenue, a patent fight, and an activist-backed sale push point toward a change in ownership before any turnaround.

Seer Inc. makes laboratory equipment that can identify about 4,500 different proteins from a blood sample, which is more than competitors like Olink can do. However, the company is burning through cash (sales dropped 34% in early 2026, and profits per dollar of sales fell sharply), and angry shareholders are pushing to sell the company to the highest bidder at a July meeting. The main threat is that Thermo Fisher Scientific, which owns the Olink competitor and also sells equipment Seer uses, could eventually build better protein testing on its own or buy Seer cheaply during a distressed sale, while Seer's legal protection for its inventions is also being challenged in court. What matters most: whether Seer's board is forced to hold a fire sale in the next few months, which would reset the entire outlook.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven protein-prediction tools (e.g. AlphaFold-style models). Computational protein prediction could someday cut demand for wet-lab discovery, but no product yet replaces Seer's physical assay. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Thermo Fisher Scientific (Olink platform, also Seer's mass-spec supplier). Thermo Fisher sells Olink, a live rival proteomics platform, while also supplying the mass specs Seer's own system needs. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Proteograph XT detects more proteins per sample than Olink, a real technical edge validated by outside labs.
What would change this call
Outcome of July 28, 2026 annual meeting proxy vote. Shows whether shareholders force a sale process, confirming loss of confidence in standalone growth.
Q2 2026 revenue print versus prior-year quarter (~August 2026). A second straight YoY decline would confirm continued customer or deal loss beyond Q1.
EPO final ruling on European patent EP4056263B1. Revocation would weaken Seer's technical moat against Olink and other PEA rivals.
Key numbers
  • Q1 2026 revenue fell 34% YoY to $2.8 million (2026-05-14)
  • Gross margin dropped to 35% from 49% a year prior (2026-05-14)
  • Stock down about 97% from its IPO, near $1.98 (2026-07-24)
Named risks
  • Activist-forced sale process at July 28, 2026 meeting could remove board control from management. Severity: high
  • Revenue down 34% YoY with gross margin collapse to 35% signals deteriorating core business. Severity: high
  • US and EU patent claims being invalidated or preliminarily marked for revocation weakens IP moat. Severity: medium
  • Dependence on NIH/academic funding described by management as persistently challenging through 2026. Severity: medium
  • Stock trading near 52-week low at $1.98 with ~97% decline since IPO raises delisting/dilution concern. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Seer Inc profitable in 2026?
No. Seer posted a net loss of $16.8 million in Q1 2026 on revenue of just $2.8 million, down 34% year over year from $4.2 million in Q1 2025, with gross margin collapsing to 35% from 49% a year earlier, as reported May 14, 2026.
Will Seer Inc be sold or acquired?
A sale looks likely. Activist investors Radoff-JEC Group, holding about 7.7%, are pushing for a forced sale ahead of the July 28, 2026 annual meeting, and all three major proxy advisors (ISS, Glass Lewis, Egan-Jones) backed their nominees as of July 23, 2026.
Who is Seer Inc's biggest competitor?
Thermo Fisher Scientific, via its ~$3.1 billion Olink acquisition (October 2023), is Seer's largest rival and simultaneously a partner supplying Orbitrap Astral mass specs used alongside Seer's Proteograph, per an April 9, 2026 Singapore collaboration announcement.
Could AI replace Seer Inc's proteomics business?
Unlikely to fully replace it. AI, as in Seer's Korea University collaboration announced June 24, 2026, analyzes proteomic data Seer's nanoparticle chemistry generates, but AI still needs that physical wet-lab data, which is Seer's core, patent-protected asset.
What happened to Seer's patents in 2026?
Seer's IP faces active challenges: the US PTAB invalidated the sole independent claim of its key '360 patent on March 23, 2026 while upholding 23 of 29 claims, and the EPO preliminarily opined its European patent EP4056263B1 should be revoked, per a March 31, 2026 report.
Is Seer stock a good investment in 2026?
High risk. As of July 24, 2026, Seer (NASDAQ: SEER) traded at $1.98 with a market cap of roughly $112 million, down about 97% from its IPO price, amid an activist proxy fight and 34% revenue decline reported in Q1 2026.
