The call

Shakepay built the regulatory paperwork first, but Wealthsimple and Coinbase are now walking through the same door with deeper pockets.

Shakepay lets Canadians buy bitcoin and earn cashback rewards through a physical card, and it has hard-won licenses and about 1 million customers. It is not easy to copy because of regulatory approvals and customer relationships, but this advantage is not protected against well-funded rivals: Wealthsimple, a much larger fintech platform, and Coinbase, a global crypto giant, both have Canadian licenses and are already offering similar products. The company's future depends on whether Wealthsimple or Coinbase can roll out matching rewards cards and bitcoin features faster than Shakepay can grow, which could happen within the next year or two.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents aren't buying bitcoin or picking crypto cards yet, this fight is human vs human for now. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Wealthsimple and Coinbase Canada. Wealthsimple has more capital and a super-app, Coinbase hired Shakepay's own GC and BizDev head. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. First mover regulatory paperwork: CIRO dealer status, Payments Canada rail access, FINTRAC registration, plus loyal cashback card users.
What would change this call
Wealthsimple launches a bitcoin-cashback card or similar crypto rewards feature within 12-18 months. Shows the incumbent can copy Shakepay's differentiated product and erode its niche.
Shakepay announces a Series B or acquisition within 6-12 months, or stays silent. Silence would signal capital staleness versus well-funded rivals like Wealthsimple.
Additional Shakepay executives depart to Coinbase Canada or Wealthsimple within a year. Would indicate talent and momentum shifting toward better-capitalized competitors.

Questions people ask
Is Shakepay profitable?
Shakepay does not publicly disclose profitability or revenue. It earns money via bid/ask spreads (roughly 1.5-4%) on crypto trades and Visa interchange fees on its prepaid card rather than trading commissions, per its own help center as of September 15, 2025.
Could AI replace Shakepay?
AI could automate parts of Shakepay's support, KYC checks and simple buy/sell UX, but it cannot replicate Shakepay's CIRO Investment Dealer registration (Jan 2025), Payments Canada membership (May 2025) or FINTRAC MSB status, which require becoming a licensed financial institution.
Who is Shakepay's biggest competitor?
Wealthsimple is Shakepay's closest incumbent threat: a much larger CIRO-regulated Canadian fintech super-app that also offers crypto trading and was a co-defendant with Shakepay in a Quebec class action, settling in May 2025 while Shakepay's case continued past a June 19, 2025 hearing.
Has Shakepay raised new funding recently?
No. Shakepay's most recent priced round is a $44 million CAD Series A closed January 20, 2022 at a $313 million CAD post-money valuation, led by QED Investors. As of July 2026, no down-round, new round, or acquisition has been publicly reported in roughly 4.5 years.
What cryptocurrencies can I trade on Shakepay?
As of February 2026, Shakepay trading is limited to only Bitcoin and Ethereum, with no altcoin support, according to a Netcoins comparison update, positioning it as a narrower product than multi-coin rivals like Netcoins and NDAX.
Does Shakepay face any lawsuits?
Yes. Shakepay is a co-defendant with Wealthsimple in a Quebec class action alleging misleading commission-free marketing while charging spread-based fees, seeking $10 million in punitive damages; Wealthsimple settled in May 2025 while Shakepay's hearing occurred June 19, 2025.
