Shandong Airlines
Chinese regional airline now folded into Air China's books after forced delisting.
Shandong Airlines keeps flying because Beijing and Air China need the routes, but as an independent company it stopped existing on paper in 2023.
Shandong Airlines flies regional routes in China as a state-owned carrier now controlled by Air China (which owns more than half the company). The airline is protected from outside competitors by government rules that control which airlines can fly which routes and use which airport gates, so new rivals cannot easily start flying the same paths. However, Shandong was forced off the stock market in July 2023 because it owed more money than it had assets, and Air China itself lost billions of yuan in 2024, which means the parent company may merge Shandong fully into Air China or force big changes like moving planes and workers around. The biggest question is whether Air China will keep Shandong as a separate airline or fold it completely into Air China's own operations over the next two years.
Resolution of the June 2024 shareholder motion to depose Shandong Aviation Group's chairman. Would reveal whether governance instability at the parent has settled or worsened.
Any Air China announcement merging Shandong's AOC, fleet, or crew bases into Air China mainline operations. Would confirm the Shandong Airlines brand is being wound down rather than preserved.

- Is Shandong Airlines profitable in 2026?
- Standalone financials have not been disclosed since Shandong Airlines was delisted in July 2023 and folded into Air China's accounts. Parent Air China Group posted a loss before taxation of RMB1.60 billion for 2024, so the consolidated entity including Shandong Airlines remained unprofitable at group level as of the last reported year.
- Who owns Shandong Airlines now?
- Air China Limited is the controlling shareholder of Shandong Airlines' parent, Shandong Aviation Group, holding around 51 to 66 percent depending on the disclosure snapshot. Air China built this position through 2022 to 2023, and SAG has been consolidated into Air China's financial statements since 21 March 2023.
- Is Shandong Airlines still a publicly traded company?
- No. Shandong Airlines was forcibly delisted from the Shenzhen Stock Exchange B-share market (code 200152) in July 2023 after two consecutive years of negative net assets, becoming the first Chinese airline ever forcibly delisted.
- Could AI replace Shandong Airlines' operations?
- No. Flight operations, pilot licensing, CAAC route rights and slot allocations are regulatory and physical moats AI cannot replicate. Shandong Airlines holds a CAAC Five-Star Flight Safety Award for 31 consecutive safe years as of 2026, a credential tied to physical operations, not software.
- Who is Shandong Airlines' biggest competitor?
- Its former competitor Air China is now its controlling parent (since 2023 consolidation), making internal integration the main threat rather than external rivalry. Comparable-scale peers include Xiamen Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Sichuan Airlines and China Eastern's Shanghai Airlines.
- Is Shandong Airlines expanding its route network in 2026?
- Yes. Shandong Airlines launched Jinan to Kuala Lumpur on 19 January 2026, Jinan to Ho Chi Minh City on 16 January 2026, and resumed the Qingdao to Taichung cross-strait route on 23 July 2026 after a seven-year suspension.
