The call

Shoals is growing fast on solar and data-center power demand, but a court-cleared rival product and pending litigation are chipping at the patent protection it depends on.

Shoals Technologies makes electrical equipment that connects solar panels and batteries to power systems. The company is growing fast and makes good money, but its main protection comes from patents on its trunk-bus design, a key piece that makes its products hard to copy. However, Voltage Energy just won a court case in June 2026 that says they can make a very similar product called LYNX PLUS without breaking Shoals' patents, which means Voltage can now compete directly on price. The biggest question is whether Shoals can shift its business to selling more equipment for AI data centers and battery storage (it has $67 million in customer orders waiting), because if it can't turn those orders into real sales and profit in the second half of 2026, investors will worry the patents are the only thing holding the price up.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI does not build solar wiring, but AI data-center power demand is a new customer segment Shoals is chasing via its ON.energy partnership. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Voltage Energy Group. Voltage's LYNX PLUS cleared the ITC in June 2026 with no infringement finding, giving buyers a design-around alternative to Shoals' patented trunk-bus system. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Patents on its trunk-bus wiring design plus a US manufacturing base that benefits from tariffs on imported solar hardware.
What would change this call
Outcome of Voltage Energy's NC district court trial and pending ITC/PTAB rulings. Further Voltage wins would show Shoals' patent moat is eroding, not structural.
Whether $67M BESS backlog converts to $200M+ by year-end 2026. Shows if the data-center/BESS pivot is scaling beyond backlog into real revenue.
Q2 2026 earnings (Aug 4, 2026) gross-margin trend versus Q1 'bottom' claim. Confirms whether margin pressure from competition and tariffs is easing or worsening.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue $475.3M, up 19.1% YoY (2025-12-31)
  • Backlog and awarded orders $758.0M, up 18% YoY (2026-03-31)
  • BESS backlog grew to $67M from $18M prior quarter (2025-12-31)
Named risks
  • Voltage Energy litigation could progressively narrow Shoals patent moat via design-around wins. Severity: high
  • Tariff policy volatility (Section 122 and 232) not built into 2026 guidance could compress margins. Severity: high
  • $70M securities settlement and separate derivative litigation remain unresolved as of July 2026. Severity: medium
  • BESS/data-center backlog ($67M) must convert to scaled revenue to justify diversification thesis. Severity: medium
  • EPC customer concentration exposes revenue to utility-scale solar policy shifts. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Shoals Technologies profitable in 2026?
Yes. Shoals posted FY2025 net income of $33.6 million, up about 39% year over year, as of December 31, 2025. Q1 2026 revenue hit $140.6 million, up 74.9% YoY, beating consensus, and full-year 2026 guidance calls for $600-640 million revenue with $118-132 million adjusted EBITDA.
Who is Shoals Technologies' biggest competitor?
Voltage Energy Group, a Chapel Hill, NC rival making trunk-bus EBOS hardware. The two are locked in parallel ITC litigation: on July 14, 2026 the ITC found Voltage in violation of Shoals trunk-bus patents, but on July 7, 2026 it cleared Voltage's newer LYNX PLUS product of infringement.
Could AI replace Shoals Technologies?
Unlikely soon. Shoals makes physical electrical hardware (cables, combiners, trunk buses) for solar and data-center power, a manufacturing business largely untouched by generative AI. It's positioned as an AI infrastructure beneficiary, partnering with ON.energy since February 2026 to supply gigawatt-scale power systems to AI data centers.
Who owns Shoals Technologies?
Shoals Technologies has traded publicly on Nasdaq as SHLS since its January 27, 2021 IPO, which raised over $2.2 billion. Founder Dean Solon remains a director and shareholder (about 3.7 million shares per a 2023 filing); institutional holders include Vanguard, T. Rowe Price, and Wellington.
Is Shoals Technologies stock risky right now?
It's been volatile: the 52-week range was roughly $4.43 to $13.18 as of July 25, 2026, far below its all-time high of $44.04. Market cap sat around $1.6-1.74 billion in July 2026, with unresolved litigation and margin pressure from tariffs adding uncertainty.
How exposed is Shoals Technologies to tariffs?
Significantly. As of its February 24, 2026 earnings call, management said it had not built potential tariff refunds into 2026 plans, noting new Section 122 tariffs of 15% stack on top of existing Section 232 metal tariffs, a factor that could compress margins.
