The call

SCB keeps its size and license advantage, but profit is dropping while a new virtual bank rival draws digital deposits.

Siam Commercial Bank is Thailand's oldest and biggest bank, with 18 million customers and government backing that makes it almost impossible to shut down. Its main problem is not failure but slow growth: profits dropped 18.5% in early 2025, and a new online-only bank called CLICX (backed by competitors KTB, AIS, and OR) launched in May 2026 offering simpler and cheaper services without the old overhead. The one thing that could change the picture is if SCB speeds up its own digital bank or cuts costs enough to match CLICX's prices while keeping customers happy.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. SCB builds its own AI tools, like the CORA assistant, rather than facing AI-native challengers. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: CLICX (KTB-AIS-OR virtual bank consortium). CLICX launched in May 2026 as Thailand's first virtual bank, pulling in digital-only deposits and loans. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A banking license, deposit insurance, and an 18.1 million-user network make fast displacement unlikely.

Questions people ask
Is Siam Commercial Bank in financial trouble?
No signs of institutional distress, but recent profit trends deserve a watch. SCBX's Q2 2026 net income fell to THB 11,116.7 million from THB 12,786.07 million a year earlier (2026-07-21), even though full-year 2025 net profit rose 8.1% year over year to THB 47,488 million (2026-01-21). Whether this is a one-quarter dip or a trend should be clearer after the Q3 2026 earnings report expected in October 2026.
Who are SCB's biggest competitors?
SCB's closest rivals are fellow Thai giants Bangkok Bank (THB 4.54 trillion in assets) and Kasikornbank (THB 4.44 trillion), both larger by balance sheet, plus state-linked Krung Thai Bank which at times leads on market share. No single dominant rival is named; SCB contests share with several close Thai peers on multiple fronts, holding loan and deposit market shares near 15.6% and 15.3% respectively as of 2025-12-31.
Is SCB at risk from AI?
AI is reshaping internal jobs more than threatening the bank's survival. SCBX already uses its own CORA credit-analysis AI and the Typhoon Thai LLM, and its SCB Tech X unit's headcount is down 27.3% to 927 people since 2023 as of 2026-03-31. A key watch-item is whether SCBX announces a formal, AI-attributed headcount reduction program beyond back-office tech roles by 2027-07, similar to Standard Chartered's plan to cut 7,000 to 8,000 roles via AI by 2030 (as of 2026-05-19).
What is SCB's biggest risk?
The main pressure is competitive rather than existential: Bank of Thailand is opening digital-only bank licenses to non-bank giants like Ant Group, CP Group, and Ascend Money consortia, which could pull deposits and payments volume from SCB over time. Even so, SCB's 1907 banking charter, licensed deposit franchise, and roughly 15-16% share of Thai loans and deposits as of 2025-12-31 reflect how hard its branch and trust network is to displace.
Is SCB losing market share to digital challengers?
Not sharply yet. Its loan and deposit shares held near 15.6% and 15.3% respectively as of 2025-12-31, showing incumbency intact even as Bank of Thailand expands virtual bank licenses to non-bank consortia such as Ant Group, CP Group, and Ascend Money.
Why is Siam Commercial Bank considered durable despite the profit dip?
Its durability rests on structural factors, not quarterly earnings: a licensed deposit franchise dating to 1907 and a roughly 15-16% share of Thai loans and deposits as of 2025-12-31 across a THB 3.33 trillion balance sheet as of 2025-09-30. The Q2 2026 net income decline to THB 11.1 billion from THB 12.8 billion (2026-07-21) is being tracked as a watch-item into Q4 2026, but it does not change the bank's underlying charter-based standing.
