The call

Sigma is growing fast by riding on top of Snowflake and Databricks, but those same two companies are building the AI features that could make Sigma's layer optional.

Sigma Computing helps companies analyze data stored in cloud warehouses like Snowflake and Databricks. It is hard to replace because customers have built workflows and governance rules into Sigma that would take months to rebuild elsewhere. However, Snowflake and Databricks, which are both investors in Sigma and its main partners, are now building their own AI-powered analytics features directly into their warehouses, which could do much of what Sigma does without needing a separate tool. The key question is whether Snowflake and Databricks will start winning deals away from Sigma by selling their all-in-one warehouse plus built-in analytics option instead, which would signal that these partners are becoming real competitors and Sigma's independent future is at risk.

Why
01
AI pressure: Snowflake Cortex Agents and Databricks AI/BI Genie. Both warehouse partners are building native AI agents that answer questions and build dashboards inside the warehouse, skipping Sigma entirely. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Snowflake and Databricks. Sigma's two biggest data platforms are also its investors and partners, and both are racing to ship BI features that could replace Sigma inside their own accounts. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep governance and workflow lock-in across both warehouses, plus Databricks Ventures and other partner capital now sitting inside Sigma's cap table.
What would change this call
Snowflake or Databricks native BI/agent features win renewals in single-platform accounts over Sigma. Shows the warehouse partners turning from co-marketing to direct competition.
Sigma's FY2027 (ending Jan 2027) ARR growth or net retention figures. Growth halving or NRR below 120% would signal the moat is weakening.
Tone shift in Sigma-Snowflake/Databricks partnership language at 2027 earnings calls or conferences. A shift from 'complementary' to 'competitive' framing would signal coopetition breaking.
Key numbers
  • $200M ARR, over 100% YoY growth (2026-04-13)
  • $3B valuation after $80M Series E (2026-05-19)
  • 2,000+ customers including JPMorgan, AMD (2026-05-19)
Named risks
  • Snowflake and Databricks are simultaneous investors and potential absorbers of Sigma's core BI layer. Severity: high
  • Self-reported ARR and growth figures are unaudited, creating expectation risk if FY ending Jan 2027 disappoints. Severity: medium
  • Ad-hoc query and dashboard functions increasingly commoditized by warehouse-native AI and general LLM agents with MCP connectors. Severity: high
  • Smaller $80M raise versus larger AI-adjacent competitor rounds limits war chest for M&A or infrastructure scaling. Severity: medium
  • Headcount and revenue figures vary widely across third-party trackers, indicating data reliability uncertainty. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Sigma Computing profitable in 2026?
Sigma has not disclosed profitability. It reported crossing $200M ARR on April 13, 2026 (vendor-claimed), doubling from about $100M a year earlier, but as a private company it does not publish net income or audited financials, so profitability status is unknown.
How much is Sigma Computing worth?
Sigma closed an $80M Series E on May 18, 2026, valuing the company at $3 billion, double its prior valuation, led by Princeville Capital with Databricks Ventures, ServiceNow Ventures, and Workday Ventures participating (vendor-claimed).
Could AI replace Sigma Computing's core product?
Sigma's dashboard-building and SQL-query features overlap with commoditizing warehouse-native AI (Snowflake Cortex, Databricks AI/BI Genie). Sigma has responded by shipping its own Sigma Agents in April 2026, calling it its fastest-adopted feature ever, but the ad-hoc query layer is increasingly commodity.
Who is Sigma Computing's biggest competitor?
Analysts name Omni Analytics as Sigma's closest architectural twin, plus Hex, Looker, ThoughtSpot, Domo, and Metabase (as of May 16, 2026). The bigger long-term threat is Snowflake and Databricks, which are both Sigma's investors/partners and are building native competing AI/BI layers.
Who owns Sigma Computing?
Sigma Computing is privately venture-backed, founded in 2014 by Jason Frantz and Rob Woollen as Bitmoon Computing. As of May 19, 2026 investors include Princeville Capital, Databricks Ventures, ServiceNow Ventures, Workday Ventures, Altimeter Capital, D1 Capital Partners, Sutter Hill Ventures, and others; no single owner or public listing exists.
Is Sigma Computing at risk from Snowflake or Databricks?
Yes and no: Snowflake and Databricks are both Sigma's platform partners and investors (Databricks Ventures joined the May 2026 Series E) and named Sigma partner of the year in Feb 2026, but both are also shipping native AI/BI features that could absorb Sigma's function within 3 to 5 years.
