The call

Record revenue and profit growth sit alongside aging aircraft, delayed Boeing deliveries, and sharpening competition from Gulf carriers on its own long-haul routes.

Singapore Airlines is a mostly government-owned airline that flies long routes around the world. It is hard to compete with because it controls key landing slots at its home airport in Singapore, has special agreements with other countries to fly certain routes, and holds all the safety certifications required to operate. However, Qatar Airways has become the world's top-ranked airline and is adding more flights, while Emirates and other Gulf-based carriers charge much less for similar premium seats, which could pressure Singapore Airlines' ticket prices if the gap keeps shrinking.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI tools from OpenAI and Salesforce are used internally for efficiency, not as a threat to the flying business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Qatar Airways, Emirates, Cathay Pacific. Gulf and regional carriers run competing premium long-haul networks now, with Qatar Airways topping Skytrax 2026 ahead of SIA. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Changi Airport hub slots, bilateral air-service treaties, and Temasek backing give it access and capital rivals cannot quickly copy.
What would change this call
SIA's business-class fare premium over Emirates on Singapore-Frankfurt narrows from ~105%. Would show Gulf carriers winning premium travelers away from SIA on shared routes.
Singapore regulator ruling on Vietnam Airlines and Air India JV/antitrust filings (filed Feb 2026). Would show whether SIA can lock in alliance-based traffic feed against Gulf rivals.
SIA drops from Skytrax top 3 in future rankings versus Qatar Airways or Emirates. Would show erosion of the premium brand reputation SIA relies on to hold fares.

Questions people ask
Is Singapore Airlines profitable in 2026?
Yes. For FY2025/26 ended 31 March 2026, Singapore Airlines Group reported record revenue of S$20.52 billion and operating profit up 39% to about S$2.4 billion, though net profit fell to S$1,223.0 million from S$2,812.2 million a year earlier due to a one-off Air India gain in FY2024/25.
Who owns Singapore Airlines?
Singapore Airlines is majority owned by Temasek Holdings, Singapore's state investment company, which held approximately 50.4% of shares as of an October 2025 filing. It trades publicly on the Singapore Exchange under ticker C6L, with remaining shares held by dispersed institutional investors.
Could AI replace Singapore Airlines' core business?
No. Singapore Airlines uses AI (OpenAI partnership April 2025, Salesforce Agentforce March 2025) for customer service and back-office efficiency, but flying, maintenance, and safety certification remain regulator-bound. The company had implemented about 50 of over 250 identified GenAI use cases as of March 2025, vendor-claimed.
Who is Singapore Airlines' biggest competitor?
Qatar Airways is SIA's top rival, surpassing it to rank #1 in Skytrax's 2026 World's Best Airline list with SIA at #2, ahead of Cathay Pacific at #3. Emirates and Cathay Pacific also contest premium long-haul routes, especially into Europe.
Is Singapore Airlines losing market share to Gulf carriers?
Not broadly, but Gulf carriers are contesting premium long-haul share. On the Singapore to Frankfurt route, SIA still charged roughly 105% more than Emirates and 88% more than Qatar Airways for business class as of a June 2026 pricing analysis, showing fare premium erosion is the key metric to watch, not outright share loss.
What is Singapore Airlines' revenue in its latest fiscal year?
Singapore Airlines Group posted record revenue of S$20.52 billion for the fiscal year ended 31 March 2026, up from S$19.54 billion the prior year, driven by higher yields and 42.2 million passengers carried group-wide, a 7.7% increase year-on-year, per its 14 May 2026 results announcement.
