The call

A once $1.7B public sequencing startup now runs as a small private lab under Deerfield, racing 10x Genomics on specs it has not yet proven it can sell at scale.

Singular Genomics builds machines that read and map genes inside tissue samples, a tool scientists use to study disease. The company is struggling because 10x Genomics and Bruker already own this market, have loyal customers locked in, and can copy whatever Singular builds; there is no real barrier stopping them from doing it faster and cheaper. The one thing that could save Singular is if hospitals or drug companies start relying on its tools for actual patient care instead of just research, or if a larger company buys it for a reasonable price before cash runs out.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not the force acting on this company; the pressure comes from rival hardware and reagent platforms, not models. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: 10x Genomics. 10x Genomics' Xenium platform already sells spatial instruments and consumables into the same labs Singular is trying to reach. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deerfield's capital and control give it runway and patience that a public micro cap burning cash could not have had alone.
What would change this call
Independently verified G4X instrument placements with repeat consumables reorders disclosed by Q4 2026. Would show real commercial traction beyond press releases and vendor claims.
10x Genomics ships a Xenium refresh closing throughput/panel/morphology gap within 12 months. Would show incumbent neutralizing Singular's spec-based differentiation.
Direct-Seq FFPE sequencing Early Access launches on schedule in H2 2026. Would show Singular delivering its key differentiator instead of slipping timelines.
Key numbers
  • IPO valued company at $1.7B (2021-05-27)
  • Deerfield acquired it for $50.2M (2024-12-23)
  • FY2023 net loss $94.8M on $2.9M revenue (2023-11-15)
Named risks
  • 97% valuation collapse from $1.7B IPO to $50.2M acquisition signals ongoing financial distress. Severity: high
  • PE-controlled private subsidiary with no public financial disclosure obscures real cash burn and traction. Severity: high
  • Sector-wide 2025 genomics layoff wave (25+ companies) tied to NIH funding cuts pressures core academic customer base. Severity: medium
  • Adoption claims (Centers of Excellence, Early Access) rest on vendor press releases, not independently verified reorders. Severity: medium
  • New CEO (April 2026) transition could presage further restructuring or a sale within 6-12 months. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Singular Genomics in financial trouble?
The company reported just $1.08M in Q4 2023 revenue against a full-year 2023 net loss of $94.8M, and it was taken private by Deerfield in February 2025 at $20.00 per share, well below its 2021 IPO price of $22. Since the take-private deal there has been no independent financial disclosure, so its survival now depends on Deerfield's private funding decisions expected by H2 2026.
What is the biggest risk to Singular Genomics?
The biggest risk is 10x Genomics, which controls roughly 95% of the spatial transcriptomics market through Visium and Xenium as of the August 2025 assessment, combined with Illumina entering spatial transcriptomics with a product expected in 2026. The field is also consolidating around a few large players, as shown by Bruker's roughly $392.6M absorption of NanoString's assets and Quanterix's acquisition of Akoya, leaving little room for a small private company like Singular Genomics to hold off larger rivals that could outcompete or copy its G4X platform.
Who are Singular Genomics' biggest competitors?
Its main competitor is 10x Genomics, which holds about 95% combined share of the spatial transcriptomics market via Visium and Xenium, with Illumina also preparing a competing spatial product for 2026. The field is consolidating further, as Bruker absorbed NanoString's assets for about $392.6M and Quanterix is acquiring Akoya, leaving Singular Genomics as a small private player among much larger, better-funded rivals.
Is Singular Genomics at risk from AI?
Direct AI displacement is judged unlikely, since G4X output feeds AI-based image and cell-typing analysis tools rather than being replaced by them. The instrument itself has no AI substitute as of the July 2026 assessment, so the company's main threats remain competitive and financial rather than AI-driven.
What gives Singular Genomics an edge over competitors?
Its main technical edge is the G4X sequencer's ability to combine 500-plex RNA, 18-plex protein, and fH&E imaging in a single run, a multiomics capability that 10x Genomics and Illumina do not yet fully match. But this differentiation sits on top of a company with almost no revenue and no independent financial backing beyond Deerfield, in a market where 10x Genomics holds about 95% share and the field is consolidating through deals like Bruker's roughly $392.6M absorption of NanoString and Quanterix's acquisition of Akoya, so the technical edge offers limited long-term protection without stronger financial backing.
What should I watch to see if Singular Genomics survives?
Watch whether Deerfield discloses fresh capital for Singular Genomics or instead moves toward a sale or wind-down by December 2026, since the company's cash runway and funding decisions sit entirely with its private owner. Also watch whether 10x Genomics raises a patent or licensing dispute over the G4X platform within a year of its 2026 commercial launch, given 10x's roughly 95% spatial transcriptomics market share as of August 2025.
