The call

SK On survives on US policy walls against Chinese rivals and rescue capital from its parent, while its own market share keeps shrinking.

SK On makes batteries for electric vehicles and currently holds about 3 percent of the global market. It is hard to compete against Chinese giants CATL and BYD because US rules block them from selling here, but that protection is fragile and could disappear if politicians change their minds. Right now SK On is losing money, its parent company wrote off billions in battery assets, and the company had to merge with another business and take huge rescue funding just to stay alive. The company's survival depends on whether the US government keeps those Chinese companies locked out, whether electric vehicle sales pick up again after falling sharply last year, and whether SK On can stop its market share from shrinking further.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI does not compete for battery contracts; AI data centers could later become customers for SK On's grid storage batteries. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: CATL and BYD dominate outside the US; LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI compete directly inside it. SK On's global share slid from 4.5% to 3.2% in a year as bigger rivals took EV and ESS contracts it needed. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. US IRA content rules keep CATL and BYD out of the American market SK On depends on.

Questions people ask
Is SK On profitable in 2026?
No. SK On remains loss-making; parent SK Innovation booked a KRW 4.2 trillion battery-asset impairment in Q4 2025 (reported 2026-07-08), and SK On targets over KRW 10 trillion EBITDA only by 2030, implying it is well below that today.
Who owns SK On?
SK Innovation owns roughly 89.5% of SK On per its most recent disclosed equity table (2026-07-18); minority stakes are held by financial investors Hanwha/Hantoo PE, MBK Partners, and East Bridge, with no confirmed IPO timeline as of July 2026.
Who is SK On's biggest competitor?
China's CATL, holding roughly 40-45% of global EV battery share versus SK On's 3.2% as of January 2026 (SNE Research data via CnEVPost, 2026-07-03); BYD at 13-14% is also expanding faster than SK On.
Could AI replace SK On's business?
No. Battery chemistry and cell manufacturing are physical industrial processes AI cannot replace. If anything, AI is a tailwind: SK On launched its 'GRIDON' ESS brand in June 2026 explicitly targeting AI data center and grid-storage customers.
Will SK On go public soon?
No confirmed timeline exists as of July 2026. SK On has instead relied on an KRW 8 trillion group capital raise (announced 2025-07-31) and asset mergers like SK Enmove to shore up its balance sheet rather than pursuing an IPO.
Is SK On losing market share?
Yes. Global EV battery share fell from about 4.5% in January 2025 to 3.2% in January 2026, with installation volumes down 21.3% year over year, and SNE Research data through May 2026 show continued slippage behind CATL and BYD.
