Skyroot Aerospace
Indian startup building small orbital rockets, first private Indian company to reach orbit.
Skyroot just proved its rocket can reach orbit, but it still has to turn a policy-protected position into paying launch contracts before 2027.
Skyroot Aerospace builds small rockets in India and successfully launched one to orbit in July 2026. The company has designed its own engines and gets support from India's space agency, which gives it a real advantage that SpaceX cannot easily copy because of Indian sovereignty rules. However, Skyroot has not sold any launches to customers yet and won't earn revenue until 2027, so its value rests on forecasts rather than actual sales. Other small-rocket companies like Virgin Orbit and Astra have disappeared despite building working rockets, showing that this business is extremely hard to make money from. The one thing that matters most over the next year or two is whether Skyroot can launch on a reliable schedule and sign paying customers at prices that actually make a profit per rocket.
AgniKul Cosmos completes Mission 02 orbital attempt with sea-recovery reusability. Would show a peer closing the technical gap that currently separates Skyroot.
Skyroot's share of the SBS-III defense satellite launch allocations is announced. Shows whether sovereign-mandate access translates into guaranteed launch volume.
- Vikram-1 reached ~450 km orbit on first try
- $1.1B pre-money valuation after $60M round
- FY26 Space Systems revenue: ₹100.6 crore
- Core launch business remains pre-revenue with commercial revenue not expected until 2027.
- Small-lift launch category has a track record of failures despite flight heritage, including Virgin Orbit and Astra.
- Valuation of $1.1 billion rests on KPMG forward projections rather than signed bookings.
- AgniKul Cosmos pursuing comparable milestones and funding on a similar timeline.
- Each future launch remains gated by ISRO and IN-SPACe regulatory approval, as seen in the 18 July 2026 countdown hold.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| AgniKul Cosmos | contesting | AgniKul flew 3D-printed engine May 2024, sought $50-75M at ~$500M valuation by May 2026 |
| SpaceX | gaining on | SpaceX barred from Indian defense payloads by sovereignty rules as of July 2026, leaving opening for Skyroot |
| ISRO | gaining on | ISRO policy-redirected away from commercial launch, ceding ground to Skyroot per July 2026 reporting |
| Rocket Lab | losing to | KPMG valued Skyroot at a discount to Rocket Lab and Firefly due to lack of commercial launch history, June 2026 |
- Is Skyroot Aerospace profitable in 2026?
- No. Skyroot's core launch business is pre-revenue as of July 2026, with commercial launch revenue not expected until 2027. Its separate Space Systems division generated about 100.6 crore rupees, roughly 10 million dollars, in FY26 revenue, per provisional financials reviewed by Entrackr on 1 June 2026.
- Has Skyroot Aerospace actually reached orbit?
- Yes. On 18 July 2026, Skyroot's Vikram-1 rocket reached roughly 450 km low Earth orbit on its first attempt in Mission Aagaman, per ISRO, making India the third country after the US and China with private orbital launch capability.
- Who owns Skyroot Aerospace and what is it worth?
- Skyroot is privately held, founded by ex-ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka in 2018. A May 2026 round of about 60 million dollars led by Sherpalo Ventures and Singapore's GIC valued it at 1.1 billion dollars pre-money, making it India's first space-tech unicorn.
- Could AI replace what Skyroot Aerospace does?
- Unlikely. Skyroot's core work is physical rocket manufacturing, propulsion testing, and regulatory-certified launch operations at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, domains largely insulated from generative-AI substitution; no evidence as of July 2026 shows AI displacing any Skyroot function.
- Who is Skyroot Aerospace's biggest competitor?
- Domestically, AgniKul Cosmos is Skyroot's closest rival, flying a 3D-printed single-piece engine rocket in May 2024 and reportedly seeking 50 to 75 million dollars at a roughly 500 million dollar valuation by May 2026. Globally, SpaceX dominates commercial launch with about 80 to 85 percent share in 2025.
- Is Skyroot Aerospace a safe company to join in 2026?
- Mixed. Skyroot has real flight heritage after its 18 July 2026 orbital success and headcount grew to roughly 1,000 to 1,500 by mid-2026, but its core launch business remains pre-revenue until 2027 and the small-launch category has a graveyard of failures like Virgin Orbit and Astra.
