The call

Slab is a small, unfunded wiki tool watching its core reason to exist get absorbed into Confluence and ChatGPT for free.

Slab helps teams store and search documentation and answers to common questions. Both Atlassian (which owns Confluence, the dominant player) and OpenAI (through ChatGPT search) now offer the same core features built in for free or as part of larger products, making it hard for Slab to justify its separate cost. The one thing that could save Slab is if it ships a real, working AI search feature in the next few months that works noticeably better than what Confluence or ChatGPT offer, because the company has been promising AI tools for over two years without releasing them.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT unified search, Glean, Notion AI. ChatGPT's July 2026 cross-document search and Glean answer the same questions Slab's wiki was built to hold, without a separate login. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Atlassian (Confluence with Rovo AI). Confluence shipped Rovo AI free across all paid plans by mid-2026, folding Slab's entire pitch into a tool most teams already pay for. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. About 1,000 small customers on cheap plans who haven't yet been forced to switch, nothing more.
What would change this call
Slab ships a working 'AI Ask' feature and reviewers stop calling AI a gap. Would show Slab can still respond to product threats rather than stall further.
Slab announces any new funding round from 2026 onward. Would show investors still see a viable path against Confluence and ChatGPT search.
Slab's employee count drops further below the current 11-50 range. Would show continued contraction consistent with losing customers to rivals.

Questions people ask
Is Slab profitable in 2026?
Built In described Slab as prioritizing capital-efficient, profitable growth with a very small team rather than blitzscaling, as of March 31, 2026. No independent financial statements confirm profitability, and Slab has raised no new funding since 2018 to 2020.
Could AI replace Slab?
Yes, likely. A June 22, 2026 third-party review states Slab has no AI features at all, calling it a striking gap, while Confluence bundles Rovo AI free on all paid plans and ChatGPT shipped unified document search in July 2026, directly covering Slab's core search function.
Who is Slab's biggest competitor?
Atlassian's Confluence, repeatedly called the established leader for enterprise knowledge management in June 2026 buyer's guides, especially for Jira-centric organizations. Notion is also frequently cited as a stronger, more flexible alternative as of January 2026.
How much funding has Slab raised?
Slab raised a $2.2M seed round in February 2018 from NEA, CRV, and Matrix Partners. PitchBook lists a disputed total of $4.1M across 14 investors including a 2020 round with South Park Commons and Zendesk Ventures; no funding has been reported since.
What is Slab's revenue?
Getlatka estimated Slab's revenue at about $3M ARR in 2024, up from $2.2M in 2023, while ZoomInfo listed revenue as under $5M as of July 6, 2026. These are third-party estimates, not company-disclosed figures.
Did Slab ever ship its promised AI Ask feature?
Unclear and contested. Slab's own 2023 Wrapped blog post (January 2024) said it planned an AI assistant called AI Ask for 2024, but a June 22, 2026 independent review says Slab has no AI features whatsoever, suggesting the feature may never have shipped.
