The call

Slack is leaning on Salesforce's AI push to stay relevant while Teams keeps growing on the back of free bundling and Slack's own headcount shrinks.

Slack is a workplace chat tool that lets teams communicate and share files in one place. It is hard to replace because Microsoft already bundles Teams free with Microsoft 365, giving Teams a big advantage despite Slack having loyal users. However, Slack is now owned by Salesforce and is being turned into a control center for AI assistants, which could make it stickier or could just turn it into another Salesforce feature. The big question is whether Slack stays its own product or just becomes a piece of Salesforce's larger software system, which will become clear when Salesforce announces earnings and picks a new CEO.

Why
01
AI pressure: Microsoft Copilot / Teams AI features. Copilot could make Teams the default AI workspace, cutting the reason to keep Slack open at all. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Teams, bundled with Microsoft 365). Teams holds roughly 37% of team collaboration share versus Slack's 13 to 19%, helped by free bundling into Office. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep workflow lock-in and years of company chat history and integrations that firms are slow to rip out.

Slack has not reported standalone financials since becoming a wholly owned Salesforce subsidiary on July 21, 2021, after Salesforce's $27.7 billion acquisition closed. Could AI replace Slack?
Slack is positioning itself as the substrate AI agents plug into rather than being replaced. Its Model Context Protocol server reached general availability around February 2026 and surpassed 1 million active users within six weeks, per Salesforce's Q1 FY2027 earnings commentary.
Is Slack laying people off?
Slack's headcount fell to roughly 1,600 employees by December 2025, down 29.6% from 2,273 in 2023, according to Revelio Labs workforce data. Active job postings also dropped 131% in 2025 to just 39 openings.
