The call

smallcase sits neutrally between brokers and managers, but its two biggest distribution partners are the ones best placed to eventually route around it.

smallcase lets investors pick from pre-built stock portfolios (called model portfolios) across 12+ brokers via a unified marketplace, and gets paid a small fee each time someone buys or sells. It is hard to copy because smallcase has already plugged itself into many brokers' systems and follows strict Indian financial rules, but its two biggest broker partners, Zerodha and Groww, can build their own portfolio marketplaces and are already doing so. Groww is the bigger concern here because unlike Zerodha (which invested in smallcase early on), Groww owns its own mutual fund company and has not tied itself to smallcase, meaning it could pull out at any time. The thing that could change everything is if smallcase can raise its fees (it charges a flat rupee amount per trade right now, which doesn't grow with profits) or if smaller brokers stay loyal and deliver enough customers to keep growth alive as traditional mutual fund companies enter the market under new Indian regulator rules.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI lab or agent is targeting SEBI-regulated model-portfolio distribution yet; AI shows up as a manager tool, not a rival. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Groww (largest broker, runs its own AMC). Groww controls the biggest active-client base and could push its own thematic baskets over smallcase's SDK inside its own app. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. SEBI-registered neutral status plus SDK integration live inside 12+ brokers makes ripping it out costly for any single broker.
What would change this call
Groww ships or promotes in-house thematic portfolios inside its app instead of the smallcase SDK. Would show its largest broker partner is bypassing smallcase for direct distribution.
HDFC AMC, ICICI Prudential, or SBI MF launch a multi-manager model-portfolio platform under SEBI's July 2025 framework. Would show large AMCs building rival platforms instead of listing on smallcase.
smallcase FY26 revenue growth reported by Entrackr falls below roughly 30% while losses stay flat. Would show deceleration continuing without a matching improvement in profitability.
Key numbers
  • Revenue reached ₹106cr in FY25, up 57% YoY (2025-07-13)
  • EBITDA loss narrowed to ₹9cr in FY25 (2025-07-13)
  • 10M+ investors, ~₹1.2 lakh crore cumulative transactions (2025-07-14)
Named risks
  • Top distribution partners Zerodha or Groww could deprioritize the smallcase SDK for in-house thematic products. Severity: high
  • Flat ₹100 per-transaction fee model gives no pricing power amid decelerating growth (120% to 57% YoY). Severity: medium
  • SEBI's July 2025 Model Portfolio Framework lowers entry barriers for AMCs, diluting manager mindshare. Severity: medium
  • Persistent net losses (Rs 34 crore in FY25) despite near-breakeven EBITDA. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is smallcase profitable in 2026?
Not fully. Per Entrackr's FY25 filing report (2025-07-13), smallcase posted an EBITDA loss of ₹9 crore on ₹106 crore revenue, near breakeven, but still had a ₹34 crore net loss, even as losses shrank 74% year over year.
Who owns smallcase?
smallcase is privately held and venture-backed. Early investor Zerodha's Rainmatter fund remains involved; its most recent round was a $50M Series D closed March 28, 2025, led by Elev8 Venture Partners with new backers State Street Global Advisors and Niveshaay AIF.
Could AI replace smallcase?
Unlikely soon. Generic AI can generate thematic stock baskets, but smallcase's SEBI-registered manager network, broker SDK integrations across 12+ apps like Zerodha Kite and Groww, and demat settlement rails are not AI-replicable as of its 2025-07 filings.
Is smallcase's biggest threat Zerodha or Groww?
Both. Zerodha co-invested via Rainmatter and co-runs Zerodha Fund House with smallcase since 2023, while Groww, India's largest broker by active NSE clients as of 2024, runs its own thematic mutual funds, making both partners potential in-house competitors.
Is smallcase's growth slowing down?
Yes. Revenue growth decelerated from +120% in FY24 (₹67.4 crore) to +57% in FY25 (₹106 crore), per Entrackr's filings-based reporting dated 2025-07-13 and 2024-11-22, though the company crossed the ₹100 crore revenue milestone.
What is smallcase's valuation?
Not officially disclosed. Its prior Series C in 2021 (led by Faering Capital, $40M) valued it around $200M, per Livemint's 2025-03-28 report on the Series D round; no confirmed valuation has been released for the March 2025 $50M Series D.
