The call

Smartly still owns the job of moving budget between rival platforms, but Meta and Google are automating the pieces of the work that used to be Smartly's alone.

Smartly.io helps companies run ads across Facebook, Google, TikTok, and other platforms from one dashboard instead of jumping between each one. The hard part to copy is managing budgets across different platforms at once, which Meta and Google cannot do for their rivals' accounts. But most of what Smartly does on a single platform, like automatically bidding for ads or writing ad copy, is being replaced by Meta's Advantage+ system, Google's Performance Max, and AI assistants that can handle ad accounts directly without needing Smartly in the middle. The company released two new tools in 2026 to prove it can measure results and coordinate budgets better than the platform giants, but they have not yet proven these tools work well enough or drive enough customer loyalty to outpace the commoditization happening around them.

Why
01
AI pressure: Meta Advantage+ and MCP server, Google Performance Max. Meta's MCP server lets ChatGPT or Claude run ad accounts directly, and Advantage+ automates single-platform work Smartly used to charge for. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Meta Platforms and Google. Meta wants full-auto ad creation from one image by late 2026, Google pushes Performance Max, both shrink demand for Smartly's automation layer. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Cross-channel budget shifting across Meta, TikTok, Google that no single platform will build for a rival's traffic.
What would change this call
Meta ships its stated late-2026 full-auto ad creation (one image plus budget to live ads) at scale. Shows platform-native automation is compressing demand for Smartly's automation layer.
Meta's MCP server access expands so Claude or ChatGPT can manage ad accounts directly without Smartly. Shows Smartly's access-friction moat eroding as AI agents bypass its middleware.
Synapse and INCRMNTAL show measurable revenue mix-shift toward cross-channel work within 1-2 quarters. Shows whether Smartly's new products can outrun single-platform commoditization.

Questions people ask
Is Smartly.io profitable?
No audited profitability figures are public. Smartly is backed by Providence Equity, which invested $223M in December 2019 at roughly a $300M valuation. Third party estimates put 2023 to 2024 revenue near $221 to $243M, but these are unaudited modeled figures, not company disclosed profit data.
Who owns Smartly.io?
Providence Equity Partners became the controlling investor after putting in 200 million euros ($223M) in December 2019, valuing Smartly at roughly 300 million euros. CEO Laura Desmond is also a Providence operating partner. No new funding round has been confirmed since 2019 as of mid 2026.
Could AI replace Smartly.io?
Partially. Meta's Advantage+ and April 2026 MCP server let AI assistants like ChatGPT manage ad accounts directly, threatening Smartly's single platform automation and bid rules. But Smartly's cross channel orchestration across Meta, TikTok, Google, Amazon and CTV is harder for any single platform owner to replicate.
Who is Smartly.io's biggest competitor?
The most structural threat is Meta itself via Advantage+ and its April 2026 MCP server, plus Google's Performance Max and Merlin. Among independent adtech rivals, Madgicx and Revealbot (rebranded Birch in 2026) compete directly for AI driven ad automation customers.
How much ad spend does Smartly.io manage?
Smartly self reports managing over $7 billion in annual ad spend as of June 2026, up from $6B in mid 2025, $5B in early 2023, and $4B in 2022, per company and press statements, not independently audited figures.
What is Smartly Synapse?
Smartly Synapse is an AI orchestration and memory layer underlying all of Smartly's AI agents, launched June 22, 2026, aggregating cross channel campaign signals across Meta, TikTok, Google, Amazon and other platforms to support automated media buying and measurement.
