The call

SmartNews turned profitable and still leads Japan's news app market, but user numbers have slipped as AI tools and free platform apps answer the same questions for less.

SmartNews reads news articles and summarizes them for you, saving time on your phone. The problem: Apple News and Google News do the same thing and come built into billions of phones already, so they did not have to build anything from scratch. On top of that, new AI chatbots like Perplexity and ChatGPT can now summarize news just as well, for free, without hiring journalists or paying publishers. The user count dropped 28 percent last year, and the company has not raised new money since 2021, which suggests investors are worried. The one thing that could turn this around: if their new product NewsArc actually gets regular users who stick around on their own, without news coverage pushing them there, that would prove the core idea still works.

Why
01
AI pressure: Perplexity, ChatGPT browsing, Google AI Overviews, Apple Intelligence summaries. These tools already answer news questions directly, skipping the app layer SmartNews depends on for attention. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Apple News, Google News. Both come free and pre-installed on the phones SmartNews needs users to open, and could add Japanese AI summaries anytime. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Profitable since 2023 restructuring, #1 Japan market share, deep publisher ties, and backers like Japan Post Capital and Dentsu.
What would change this call
Whether the Tokyo IPO occurs in October 2026 and at what valuation versus the 2021 $2B mark. A down-round or delayed listing would confirm investor doubt about the growth story.
Whether SmartNews Japan MAU and ARPU show sustained growth 6+ months after NewsArc/AI Matome launch. Organic re-acceleration would show the AI curation product can offset user decline.
Whether Apple or Google ship a native Japanese AI news summarizer inside iOS or Android. Would show the same US-style discovery interception replicating in SmartNews's home market.
