The call

SoftBank now trades as a leveraged proxy on OpenAI's IPO and its own ability to refinance $40B before March 2027.

SoftBank is a Japanese company that owns pieces of many businesses, including a 90 percent stake in the chip designer Arm and a large investment in OpenAI. The company is hard to replace because it controls Arm and has long-term relationships with governments and other powerful investors. However, SoftBank put about 65 billion dollars into OpenAI through a loan that comes due in March 2027, meaning almost all its eggs are in one basket: whether OpenAI's initial public offering succeeds and the company's value stays high. Banks already refused to lend SoftBank more money against the OpenAI stake in June 2026, which suggests they doubt this bet will work out. The big question is whether OpenAI goes public successfully in late 2026 and stays valuable, because if it does not, SoftBank may have to scramble to refinance the loan or sell assets during a weak moment for the AI industry.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI itself (concentration risk) plus Gemini and Anthropic closing the gap. SoftBank is not eaten by AI, it bet the company on one AI winner, so a stumble at OpenAI or a Gemini surge hits SoftBank hard. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Sovereign wealth funds and rival mega investors in AI deals. Gulf sovereign funds and others compete for the same AI mega deals, diluting SoftBank's leverage as a uniquely large check writer. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Roughly 90% ownership of Arm plus permanent capital give SoftBank a real asset base independent of the OpenAI bet.

Questions people ask
Is SoftBank Group profitable in 2026?
Yes. SoftBank Group reported consolidated net income of ¥5,002.3 billion for FY2025 (ended March 31, 2026), up 333.7% year over year, driven largely by $43.9 billion in OpenAI-related investment gains booked over the same 12 months.
Who owns SoftBank Group?
SoftBank Group is publicly traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (ticker 9984) and OTC in the US as SFTBY. Founder Masayoshi Son remains the largest shareholder, holding roughly 29.68% economic interest with disproportionate voting control as of March 2025.
Is SoftBank's OpenAI bet too risky?
SoftBank has committed an expected $64.6 billion cumulative to OpenAI for roughly 11-13% ownership, funded partly by a $40 billion bridge facility maturing March 2027. A subsequent $6-10 billion margin loan against the OpenAI stake stalled in June 2026, signaling lender caution.
Who is SoftBank Group's biggest competitor?
Prosus/Naspers is often called 'SoftBank without the drama,' a rival permanent-capital tech holding company anchored by a Tencent stake. Sequoia and Accel also compete directly with SoftBank's Vision Fund in late-stage deals as of 2026.
Could AI replace SoftBank Group's core business?
No. SoftBank's core function is capital allocation and deal judgment, which isn't AI-replaceable, but the company deploys AI internally via its 'Cristal intelligence' agent across 2,500 business systems, and its portfolio value is now heavily proxy-exposed to whether OpenAI's models succeed.
Is SoftBank Group stock a good buy right now (2026)?
SoftBank shares fell about 49% over the trailing year to July 2026 even as the Nikkei 225 rose about 61%, and S&P moved its outlook to negative in March 2026 before restoring it to stable in July 2026 citing Arm's share price gains.
