Solana Labs
Venture studio behind Solana Mobile hardware and Solana Ventures, spun off from core protocol dev.
Solana the network is booming, but Solana Labs lost its core engineering role to Anza in 2024 and now bets on a niche phone and a VC portfolio.
Solana Labs used to build the Solana blockchain itself, but that work moved to a separate company called Anza in early 2024. Now Solana Labs mainly runs a phone business (Solana Mobile) and invests in crypto startups through a venture fund. The real question is whether the Solana phone can become a normal device that regular people buy and use for everyday apps, or if it stays a niche gadget only crypto enthusiasts care about. Right now the financials are unclear, there are lawsuits pending, and most of the value in the Solana ecosystem flows to Anza, the Solana Foundation, and people who hold SOL tokens, not to Solana Labs itself. If Solana Mobile has only grown to roughly 100 apps by 2027 with little mainstream adoption, then Solana Labs is essentially just another venture capital fund, not a standalone company worth building a career around.
Ruling or settlement in the 2022 securities class action against Solana Labs. Clarifies legal and financial exposure at the entity level.
Clarity Act vote outcome in the US Senate around Q3 2026. Would reduce regulatory overhang affecting Solana-linked ventures.
- Disclosed funding estimates range $22.6M to $364M+
- Entity revenue estimated near $4.5M a year
- Ecosystem stablecoin supply hit $16.4B, but flows to Foundation not Labs
- 2022 securities class action against Solana Labs still active against remaining defendants as of July 2026.
- Dedicated crypto phone category has a history of repeated failure (Essential, HTC Exodus, Sirin Finney).
- Digital Asset Market Clarity Act not yet passed full Senate as of July 2026, leaving regulatory status unresolved.
- Entity-level funding and revenue figures conflict wildly across CB Insights, Pitchbook, and Clay, obscuring true financial health.
- Recurring ecosystem security incidents (Allbridge $1.65M exploit, Upbit ~$30M hack) threaten reputational trust.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Anza | losing to | Anza took over core protocol engineering and validator client after spinning out January 2024 |
| Ethereum | contesting | Remains dominant smart-contract platform incumbent as of 2026 ecosystem comparisons |
| Apple/Google mobile duopoly | contesting | Solana Mobile's zero-commission dApp store challenges app-store cut model, edge already eroding via DMA sideloading rules 2026 |
| Dunamu/Upbit (ecosystem partner exposure) | losing to | South Korea FSS opened sanctions proceedings after ~$30M Solana-linked hack, July 2026 |
- Is Solana Labs profitable in 2026?
- No reliable entity-level financials are public. Aggregator estimates of Solana Labs revenue range wildly and are considered low-confidence scraped figures, so profitability cannot be confirmed. The company operates as a venture studio (Solana Mobile, Solana Ventures) rather than a revenue-disclosing operator as of mid-2026.
- Who owns Solana Labs?
- Solana Labs, Inc. is privately held and venture-backed with no parent company. Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of the Solana protocol, remains CEO as of July 2026. It is legally distinct from the nonprofit Solana Foundation and from Anza, the engineering firm that spun out in January 2024.
- Could AI replace Solana Labs' engineering team?
- CEO Anatoly Yakovenko said in October 2025 he is increasingly comfortable ceding software development tasks to agentic AI coding tools. Since core protocol engineering already moved to Anza in 2024, Solana Labs' remaining dev-relations and app-tooling work is more exposed to AI automation than its hardware distribution.
- Is Solana Labs the same company as Anza?
- No. Anza separated from Solana Labs at the start of 2024, taking most core protocol engineers and forking the validator client into 'Agave', per Anza's own January 30, 2024 announcement. Solana Labs retained Solana Mobile and Solana Ventures, not the core blockchain engineering function.
- Is Solana Mobile's Seeker phone succeeding commercially?
- As of an August 2025 interview, Solana Mobile's Seeker device hosted nearly 100 apps in its zero-commission dApp store, a self-reported figure not independently verified. Dedicated crypto phones (Essential, HTC Exodus, Sirin Labs Finney) have historically failed, and Solana's earlier Saga phone sold out mainly due to a memecoin airdrop, not organic demand.
- Has Solana Labs faced lawsuits?
- Yes. A 2022 securities class action naming Solana Labs, the Solana Foundation, Anatoly Yakovenko, Multicoin Capital, and FalconX remains active against remaining defendants after Yakovenko and the Foundation were voluntarily dismissed without prejudice in 2024, as reported as of July 21, 2026.
