The call

Sonder is wound down, delisted, and in Chapter 7 liquidation after Marriott walked away, with AI playing no part in its end.

Sonder was a company that rented apartments and marketed them as short-term hotel stays through Marriott's rewards program. The business was hard to copy because Marriott's brand and customer loyalty gave Sonder a big advantage, but it turned out the real problem was that renting long-term apartments and then renting them out short-term did not make money. When Marriott ended their partnership in November 2025, Sonder had no other way to survive and filed for bankruptcy. The company is now being sold off in pieces, so there is no coming back for this business.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI did not cause this. Sonder collapsed from lease costs and a broken Marriott deal, not from any AI product. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Marriott International. Marriott ended the 20-year Bonvoy licensing deal on Nov 9, 2025, citing default, and that triggered the Chapter 7 filing days later. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None. The company has no operations, no listing, and is being liquidated for parts by Gordon Brothers.

Questions people ask
Is Sonder Holdings still in business in 2026?
No. Sonder filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation on November 10 to 13, 2025 after Marriott terminated its 20 year Bonvoy licensing deal, was delisted from Nasdaq around January 20, 2026, and now trades OTC as SONDQ near $0.000001. It is defunct, not operating.
Why did Sonder go bankrupt?
Marriott terminated its 20 year licensing agreement on November 9, 2025 citing Sonder's default, after the Marriott Bonvoy integration caused unexpected technical problems and a steep unanticipated revenue decline. Sonder had $1.6 billion in cumulative losses through end of 2024 and filed Chapter 7 on November 10 to 13, 2025.
Is it safe to take a job at Sonder Holdings?
No, there is no job to take. Sonder ceased operations after its November 2025 Chapter 7 filing and Gordon Brothers is liquidating its leasehold portfolio across 17 states as of December 2025. Note: an unrelated Australian company also named Sonder, sonder.io, a workplace safety app, is still operating separately.
Who is buying Sonder's former properties?
Multiple operators absorbed former Sonder units: Kasa took over roughly 10 properties and was in talks for more across six metros by November 21, 2025, and Prism's Belvilla brand acquired 10 Sonder properties for its US debut announced March 2, 2026.
Did AI replace Sonder Holdings?
No. Sonder's collapse stemmed from its master lease real estate model and the failed Marriott Bonvoy technical integration, not AI disruption. No AI competitor or model is cited in reporting as a cause; the failure was lease arbitrage economics per Commercial Observer, November 24, 2025.
How much did Sonder Holdings lose before going bankrupt?
Sonder posted cumulative losses of $1.6 billion through the end of 2024, and its operations burned roughly $240 million more cash than they generated in 2023 to 2024 combined, per its 10-K reported by Commercial Observer on November 24, 2025.
