The call

A huge, decades-old coaching chain now facing tax raids, student-safety scandals, and a slow shift of price-sensitive students toward digital rivals.

Sri Chaitanya runs over 900 physical coaching centers teaching roughly 850,000 students preparing for India's NEET medical entrance exam. It is hard to replace because it has decades of brand trust, actual buildings and teachers, and government accreditation, but it faces three real threats: India's Supreme Court and state governments are cracking down on coaching centers with new rules (July 2025 onwards); there have been repeated student deaths on campus that led to campus closures and staff arrests; and tax authorities have seized money and are investigating the company. The biggest question mark is whether the NEET exam switches to computer-based testing in 2027, if that happens, cheaper online rivals like Physics Wallah (which offer test prep on phones and laptops for less money) could pull away price-sensitive students, while Sri Chaitanya scrambles to adapt.

Why
01
AI pressure: Physics Wallah. Physics Wallah's low-price app-based coaching pulls price-sensitive NEET and JEE students from costly offline campuses. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Narayana Group. Narayana runs the identical Techno School model, competing directly for the same JEE and NEET students nationwide. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Decades of accreditation, residential campuses, and distribution across 900+ centers are hard for app-only rivals to replicate.

Outcome of the March 2025 I-T tax investigation and any penalty order by 2027. Shows whether financial-compliance risk is contained or escalating.
Campus derecognitions or new state coaching-bill actions against Sri Chaitanya through 2026. Shows whether regulatory clampdown is actually shrinking its footprint.
Enrollment or market-share data after NEET moves to Computer-Based Testing in 2027. Shows whether Physics Wallah's digital model captures share during the transition.

Questions people ask
Is Sri Chaitanya Educational Institutions profitable?
No audited financials are public. A March 2025 tax investigation described the group as generating hundreds of crores annually through fees, and I-T officials seized 5 crore cash across Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Guntur and Mumbai raids that month, following a 10.5 crore seizure in 2020.
Who owns Sri Chaitanya Educational Institutions now?
It is privately held by the Boppana family. Founder Dr. B.S. Rao died 13 July 2023 after a heart attack, and the group is now run by his daughters Sushma Boppana as CEO and Academic Director, and Seema Boppana, per reporting dated 2025-03-10.
Could AI replace Sri Chaitanya's coaching business?
Doubt-resolution and tutoring functions are exposed, and Sri Chaitanya's own AINA voice AI mentor, launched October 2025 on Google Cloud Vertex AI and Gemini 2.0 Flash, targets exactly those tasks. But residential hostels, discipline, and board accreditation remain hard for AI to replace.
Is Physics Wallah beating Sri Chaitanya?
Physics Wallah is a digital-first, lower-cost rival gaining share among budget-conscious NEET and JEE aspirants. Sri Chaitanya's July 2026 Acer/Intel NEET Ready Laptop launch, tied to the 2027 NEET Computer-Based Testing shift, is a direct response to that pressure.
Who is Sri Chaitanya's biggest competitor?
Narayana Group is its closest direct rival, running an identical Techno School model across South India for decades, including a failed 2013 joint venture called ChinNa, per a 2024-05-15 report. Physics Wallah is the newer structural threat via digital-first pricing.
What happened with Sri Chaitanya and student suicides?
Sri Chaitanya has faced repeated incidents including a Narsingi campus derecognition in 2023 with staff arrests, a Madhapur hostel death in May 2026, and a Vijayawada EAPCET-related student suicide reported 29 May 2026, amid nationwide scrutiny of coaching-center practices.
