The call

STACK has real customers and data but is shrinking while Autodesk, Procore and Nemetschek build the same AI takeoff features natively.

STACK builds software that reads building plans and automatically creates material lists and cost estimates for construction companies. The problem is that this kind of work, reading images and counting things, is exactly what modern AI is getting very good at, and much larger companies like Autodesk and Procore can add these features to their own products without much effort or cost. The one thing that could save STACK is if its own AI becomes noticeably better at this work than what the big companies offer, and if customers find that difference so valuable they stay loyal, but the company's recent shrinking (fewer employees, less traffic, a smaller fundraise) suggests that is not happening yet.

Why
01
AI pressure: GPT-4o, Gemini and other vision models reading plans for automated takeoff. Vision AI can already read PDFs and CAD files and generate quantities, the exact task STACK charges for. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Autodesk Construction Cloud, Procore, Nemetschek (Bluebeam plus ConstructConnect). All three own the upstream construction workflow and are shipping native AI takeoff features with no cost barrier to STACK's niche. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Years of accumulated takeoff data and existing enterprise accounts, if that data actually produces a measurable accuracy edge.
What would change this call
Autodesk, Procore, or Nemetschek ship native AI takeoff/estimating features in H2 2026. Would show incumbents closing STACK's product gap without needing to acquire it.
STACK announces a new funding round, down round, or acquisition by Nemetschek/Autodesk/Procore. Would confirm whether capital strain resolves via investment, distress, or sale.
STACK reports headcount stabilizing or growing after June 2026. Would indicate the contraction trend has reversed rather than deepened.
Key numbers
  • Headcount down 14% YoY to ~126 employees (2026-06-04)
  • Raised ~$3M in 2025 vs $17M round in 2022 (2025-08-13)
  • Revenue estimated $31.8M to $50M by trackers (2024-12-19)
Named risks
  • Core takeoff task is automatable by frontier AI vision models that incumbents can ship natively. Severity: high
  • Two CEO changes in 13 months (Feb 2025 and Mar 2026) signal leadership instability. Severity: high
  • Headcount down 14 percent year over year and web traffic down 5 percent QoQ as of mid 2026. Severity: medium
  • Small 3 million dollar funding round in Aug 2025 versus 17 million in 2022 suggests funding slowdown. Severity: medium
  • Revenue figures across third party trackers vary wildly, from 31.8 million to 100 million dollars, indicating poor data transparency. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is STACK Construction Technologies profitable in 2026?
STACK is private and does not disclose profitability. Third party revenue estimates range from about 31.8 million to 100 million dollars annually as of December 2024, but no profit or loss figures have been reported by the company or independent auditors.
Has STACK Construction Technologies had layoffs?
Headcount tracking shows a decline from about 154 employees in November 2022 to 126 by June 2026, a 14 percent year over year drop as of mid 2026, with only 2 open roles noted at that time, per Crustdata's July 2026 tracking.
Could AI replace STACK Construction Technologies?
STACK's core product, digital takeoff and estimating from construction drawings, is a computer vision task that frontier AI models can automate. STACK itself announced AI centric takeoff features in January 2024 to try to stay ahead, but Autodesk and Procore are shipping similar native features.
Who is STACK Construction Technologies' biggest competitor?
Procore is cited as the sector's largest independent construction management platform per TrustRadius reviews. Autodesk Construction Cloud and Nemetschek's ConstructConnect and Bluebeam are also direct competitors, all with more resources to ship AI takeoff features.
Who owns STACK Construction Technologies?
STACK is privately held and venture backed, with investors including CincyTech and Level Equity Management. Level Equity led a 17 million dollar growth round announced March 22, 2022. No IPO or acquisition of the company has occurred as of mid 2026.
Did STACK Construction Technologies raise funding recently?
STACK raised approximately 3 million dollars in August 2025, a much smaller round than its 17 million dollar growth round led by Level Equity in March 2022, suggesting a funding slowdown relative to its earlier growth stage.
