The call

StarkWare has the cryptography but not the revenue, and its entire future now rides on a new products unit proving itself within months.

StarkWare built special math tools (called STARK proofs) that help Ethereum process more transactions faster, and it created a network called Starknet to use those tools. The problem is that Ethereum itself got much better and cheaper in 2024, which meant fewer people needed Starknet, so the company's money from fees dropped by 99 percent. Now the company is betting everything on new products it is building itself, but these products are unproven and the company only has about six months to prove they work and make real money, otherwise it will be hard to justify what the company is worth.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI models don't compete for StarkWare's core cryptographic proof market, this is a crypto infrastructure problem, not an AI one. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Ethereum's own core protocol upgrades (EIP-4844/Dencun). Ethereum's Dencun upgrade cut the fees StarkWare's whole business ran on, crashing Starknet revenue 98% since late 2023. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep cryptographic know-how in STARK proofs and the Cairo language, still hard for rivals to copy quickly.
What would change this call
Whether StarkWare's Applications unit announces a paying enterprise client by around October 2026. Shows whether the pivot away from network fees can produce real revenue.
Whether StarkWare announces a new funding round or valuation reset within 6 months. Shows whether investors still support the $8B mark or a markdown occurs.
Whether further layoffs or senior departures happen after the April 2026 cuts. Shows whether the restructuring stabilized the company or problems are deepening.
Key numbers
  • Starknet revenue fell from $5.8M/month to $48-100K/month (April 2026)
  • Headcount cut from 190 to about 170 staff (April 2026)
  • Raised $100M at $8B valuation in 2022 (May 2022)
Named risks
  • 98-99% network revenue collapse driven by Ethereum's own Dencun upgrade, outside StarkWare's control. Severity: high
  • Stale $8B valuation from May 2022 with no new funding round since, amid business contraction. Severity: high
  • Applications unit pivot unproven, only demos like June 2026 Private KYC shown, no disclosed paid deals. Severity: medium
  • STRK token near all-time lows with a ~225.9M token unlock due mid-August 2026 adding sell pressure. Severity: medium
  • Ongoing headcount cuts and leadership churn, including April 2026 COO resignation. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is StarkWare profitable in 2026?
No clear profitability signal. Starknet network revenue collapsed 98-99%, from about $5.8-6M/month in late 2023 to roughly $48,000-$100,000/month by April 2026, per CoinDesk and Protos reporting on the April 13, 2026 layoffs.
Did StarkWare have layoffs in 2026?
Yes. On April 13, 2026, StarkWare cut dozens of jobs and restructured into two units, shrinking headcount from roughly 190-191 to about 170 globally, according to Calcalist and CoinDesk coverage of the reorganization.
Who owns StarkWare and has it raised new funding recently?
StarkWare is private, founded in 2018 by Eli Ben-Sasson, Uri Kolodny, Michael Riabzev and Alessandro Chiesa. Its last funding round was a $100M Series D at an $8B valuation on May 25, 2022, led by Greenoaks Capital and Coatue; no new round has followed as of July 2026.
Is Ethereum StarkWare's biggest competitor?
In a structural sense yes. Ethereum's own EIP-4844 (Dencun) upgrade in March 2024 sharply cut Layer-2 fee revenue industry-wide, directly driving Starknet's 98-99% network revenue collapse by April 2026, per CoinDesk's April 13, 2026 report.
Could AI replace StarkWare's cryptography work?
Unlikely near-term. StarkWare's core IP is the STARK zero-knowledge proof system and Cairo language, specialized cryptography research not easily automated by current LLMs, though routine auditing, documentation and marketing roles are more AI-exposed and were reportedly hit in the April 2026 layoffs.
What is StarkWare's Applications unit and does it make money yet?
Announced April 13, 2026 and led by CPO Avihu Levy, it is a new revenue-focused unit built around privacy, KYC and quantum-safe products; as of July 2026 it has shipped demos, like a June 24, 2026 zero-knowledge KYC demo, but no disclosed paid enterprise deals.
