The call

Stash turned a profit and found a buyer in Grab, but it did so by shrinking staff and subscribers while Robinhood and free bank AI tools pull ahead.

Stash helps new investors start small through an app that gives advice and charges a monthly subscription fee. The problem is that bigger, free competitors like Robinhood and Acorns do nearly the same thing at no cost, and banks are now building their own free AI money advisors into their apps. The one thing that could save Stash is if Grab uses it to build something new in Southeast Asia or if it finds a way to keep customers that bigger rivals cannot match, but right now it is losing subscribers and cutting staff rather than growing.

Why
01
AI pressure: Bank AI assistants (BofA Erica, JPMorgan LLM Suite, Morgan Stanley AI@). Free AI coaching from big banks undercuts Stash's paid Money Coach AI, which costs $3 to $12 a month for similar guidance. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Robinhood. Robinhood has 27.4M funded customers and $307B in assets, dwarfing Stash's 1M subscribers and $5B AUM with a free model. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Stash holds a registered investment adviser license, runs profitably, and keeps 1M paying subscribers inside a subscription billing habit.

Questions people ask
Is Stash profitable in 2026?
Yes. Grab's acquisition disclosure on February 12, 2026 states Stash is Adjusted-EBITDA and cash-flow positive, with over $5B in assets under management and roughly 1 million paying subscribers at the time of the deal announcement.
Who owns Stash now?
Grab Holdings Limited, the Singapore-listed super-app, closed its acquisition of Stash on July 1, 2026 at a $425M enterprise value, paying 50.1% upfront with the remainder over three years, ending Stash's run as an independent VC-backed fintech.
Is Stash losing ground to Robinhood?
Yes. As of Q1 2026 Robinhood had 27.4 million funded customers and $307B in platform assets, versus Stash's roughly 1 million paying subscribers and $5B AUM reported February 12, 2026, a massive scale gap.
Could AI replace Stash's Money Coach app?
Partly. Stash's Money Coach AI, launched May 2025, faces free bank-embedded rivals like BofA's Erica and JPMorgan's LLM Suite, though Stash's SEC-registered adviser status and custody of real accounts via Stride Bank are harder to replicate with a chatbot alone.
Why did Grab buy Stash at such a low price?
Stash's independent valuation was about $1.4B in 2021; Grab closed the deal at a $425M enterprise value on July 1, 2026, roughly a 70% markdown, reflecting subscriber decline and a tougher fintech funding environment.
Is Stash's subscriber base growing or shrinking?
Shrinking. Stash reported 1.3 million paying subscribers with $4.3B AUM in May 2025, but by February 12, 2026 Grab's disclosure showed only about 1 million subscribers even as AUM grew past $5B.
