The call

Statista survives inside a profitable parent while its old business of selling stats to humans shrinks and its new business of selling stats to AI is still unproven.

Statista collects public statistics and sells access to them through a subscription website, mostly to companies and researchers who need reliable sources and citations. The problem is that ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's search now do the same job instantly and free, which has left Statista's customer count and website traffic flat or falling even though the parent company owns it and keeps it alive. The company is trying to survive by selling data feeds directly to those AI companies instead of competing with them, but it is too early to tell if this new business will grow fast enough to replace the paying customers it is losing.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews. Chatbots now pull and cite the same public stats Statista sells, for free, cutting the reason to visit or subscribe. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Google (AI Overviews and Search). Google's search results increasingly answer stat queries directly, so fewer clicks ever reach Statista's pages. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Owned licensed datasets and citation credibility that AI platforms need and now pay to access via MCP and Statista Connect.
What would change this call
Ströer reports Statista DaaS segment organic growth for Q2/H1 2026 on Aug 13, 2026. Shows whether AI-platform licensing (MCP, Research AI) offsets core traffic decline.
Ströer Q3 2026 results (Nov 12, 2026) show Statista headcount and traffic trend. Indicates whether the pivot to AI-data supplier stabilizes the business or shrinkage continues.
Any further Statista unit disposals or platform closures announced after 2025's French-site shutdown. Would signal continued retreat rather than successful repositioning.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 segment revenue €352.0m, +2.8% organic (2025-12-31)
  • Headcount down 8-10% year over year (2026-06-15)
  • Traffic down 4.9% quarter over quarter (2026-06-15)
Named risks
  • Core statistic lookup and citation product commoditized by free AI assistants. Severity: high
  • Headcount decline of 8 to 10% YoY through 2026 signals restructuring or severance. Severity: medium
  • Third-party traffic fell 4.9% quarter over quarter as of mid-2026. Severity: medium
  • AI-platform licensing pivot (MCP, Connect) unproven as material revenue source. Severity: medium
  • Continued unit disposals by parent Ströer following 2025 strategy/consulting divestiture. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Statista profitable in 2026?
Statista sits inside Ströer SE's DaaS & E-Commerce segment, which posted organic growth of +2.8% for FY2025 (as of 2025-12-31) and +3.5% in Q4 2025, per Ströer's preliminary figures. Segment revenue was flat to slightly down at €352.0m after a unit disposal, but the parent remains profitable overall.
Could AI replace Statista?
Statista's core job, aggregating and citing public statistics, overlaps heavily with what ChatGPT, Claude, and AI search now do free and instantly. Statista responded by launching an MCP server on 2025-11-20 feeding 1M+ data points directly into Claude, OpenAI, and Gemini rather than being bypassed.
Who owns Statista?
Statista GmbH is a subsidiary of German media group Ströer SE, which acquired an 81.3% stake in December 2015. It is not independently publicly traded; Ströer reports Statista's results within its DaaS & E-Commerce segment.
Is Statista laying off employees?
Independent trackers show declining headcount: Revelio Labs counted 2,719 employees in December 2025, down 10.5% year over year from 3,021 in 2024, while Crustdata reported 1,274 employees in June 2026, down 8.1% year over year, with only 5 open roles.
Who is Statista's biggest competitor?
Statista competes directly with IBISWorld, Euromonitor International, and Mintel for market/industry research subscriptions, while facing indirect commoditization pressure from free AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity that now replicate its core statistic-lookup function.
What is Statista doing to survive AI disruption?
Statista launched Research AI in May 2024 for querying its proprietary datasets, rolled out the API-based Statista Connect in April 2025, and on 2025-11-20 launched an MCP server exposing over 1 million data points directly to Claude, OpenAI, and Gemini with citation compliance.
