Stellar Development Foundation
Nonprofit foundation running the Stellar blockchain network for payments and asset tokenization.
Stellar has real bank and institutional deals live, but Solana just took a marquee win away and the next two contests will show who actually leads.
Stellar Development Foundation is a nonprofit organization that built a payment network meant to help banks and money services move money between countries cheaply and quickly. It has real wins: MoneyGram will use Stellar to issue stablecoins starting June 2026, and the DTCC (the group that clears stock trades) agreed to use it in 2027. But Stellar is not the only choice anymore. Solana just won Western Union's stablecoin business in May 2026, JPMorgan and other big banks are building their own payment system with The Clearing House, and companies like Ripple offer similar technology that banks can copy. Stellar's real danger is not that its technology is broken, but that it is not special enough. The company survives if the DTCC launch works smoothly and MoneyGram's global rollout actually moves real money; if both stall or if banks choose rival systems instead, Stellar becomes a sidelined player.
The winner of the next marquee institutional stablecoin or tokenization deal, Stellar versus Solana or Ripple. Shows whether Stellar keeps losing head-to-head bake-offs like it did to Solana with Western Union.
Whether the JPMorgan/Citi/BofA/Wells/HSBC bank consortium tokenized-deposit network actually launches around 1H 2027. Shows if banks are building around Stellar entirely, bypassing public chains for institutional settlement.
- $2.34B treasury, all held in XLM
- 3.6B transactions processed in 2025
- 277 employees, up from 185 in 2023
- DTCC integration could slip past 1H 2027 or launch as diluted multi-chain option rather than primary rail.
- XLM token value swings heavily with crypto market and headline news, e.g. ~50% rally then pullback around DTCC news, mid-2026.
- Losing further marquee institutional deals to Solana or Ripple after the Western Union loss.
- GENIUS Act stablecoin rules remain unfinalized past July 18, 2026 deadline, pushed to Jan 18, 2027, creating regulatory uncertainty.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Solana | gaining on | Won Western Union's USDPT stablecoin over Stellar, May 2026 |
| Ripple/XRP Ledger | contesting | Stellar won MoneyGram's MGUSD deal over Ripple, June 2, 2026 |
| Bank consortium (JPMorgan, Citi, BofA, Wells Fargo, HSBC via The Clearing House) | gaining on | Targeting 1H 2027 launch of shared tokenized-deposit network, per July 21, 2026 Forbes report |
| Digital Asset/Canton | contesting | Competing chain in DTCC's parallel multi-chain tokenization strategy, May 2026 |
- Is Stellar Development Foundation profitable?
- SDF is a nonprofit with no shareholders or profit motive; it is self-funded from an initial XLM allocation, holding roughly 11.95 billion XLM (about $2.34B) across its accounts as of July 15, 2026, per its own mandate disclosure.
- Who owns Stellar Development Foundation?
- No one; SDF is a US nonprofit founded in 2014 by Jed McCaleb, Joyce Kim, and with backing from Stripe CEO Patrick Collison. Stripe seeded it with $3M for 2B XLM (2% of supply); there are no equity investors or shareholders.
- Is Stellar losing ground to Solana?
- Yes in at least one high-profile case: Western Union picked Solana, via Anchorage Digital, for its USDPT stablecoin in May 2026, choosing it over Stellar in the same remittance segment where MoneyGram's MGUSD launched on Stellar weeks later.
- Could AI replace Stellar Development Foundation?
- Unlikely to replace it; SDF's x402 protocol, live on Stellar since March 9, 2026, is built so AI agents become payment customers, settling stablecoin payments in under 5 seconds, positioning AI as a user of the rail rather than a threat to it.
- Has DTCC actually integrated with Stellar yet?
- Not live yet. DTCC signed an agreement May 27, 2026 to connect its tokenization service, covering over $114 trillion in custodied assets, to Stellar, but the target go-live window is 1H 2027, not confirmed production as of mid-2026.
- Who is Stellar Development Foundation's biggest competitor?
- Solana and Ripple's XRP Ledger are the closest rivals for stablecoin and tokenization deals; Solana beat Stellar for Western Union's USDPT stablecoin in May 2026, while Stellar won MoneyGram's MGUSD launch on June 2, 2026 over Ripple.
