The call

StockX still runs the biggest sneaker resale marketplace, but shrinking margins, flat volume, and a stale $3.8B valuation show a company holding ground, not expanding it.

StockX runs a website where people buy and sell sneakers and collectibles. The company physically checks items before shipping to make sure they are real, and it has built up millions of buyers and sellers over time. However, the sneaker resale market is no longer growing fast, prices are falling, profits are shrinking, and both GOAT (another resale site) and eBay offer nearly identical service at lower cost, so StockX no longer has an advantage that is hard to copy. The company has been laying off workers for three years and is not making more money overall. The one thing that could change everything is whether StockX's new experiments, like selling used clothing and vintage items or hosting live shopping events, actually attract enough new buyers to make up for the sneaker slowdown.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No named AI product yet targets resale authentication or pricing; AI mainly used internally for fraud and price-trend data. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: eBay (Authenticity Guarantee for sneakers over $100). eBay now offers authentication with lower fees on the same sneakers, pulling volume from StockX's core category. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Physical verification centers plus 60M+ completed trades and 20M+ buyers give StockX trust and liquidity peers still lack at scale.
What would change this call
StockX reports flat or declining GMV again in 2H 2026 despite Listings and Live launches. New categories are not offsetting a maturing, share-losing sneaker core.
eBay discloses rising Authenticity Guarantee sneaker volume through 2026. A lower-fee incumbent is converting StockX's customer base at scale.
StockX announces another layoff within 6 months paired with no new priced funding round. Margin pressure persists without fresh capital validating growth.

Questions people ask
Is StockX profitable in 2026?
StockX has not publicly disclosed profitability. Co-founder Chris Kaufman said in December 2025 that nine-figure annual revenue is now the norm but declined to give a figure. A marketing blog claims operational profitability in core markets since late 2024, but this is a vendor-adjacent, unverified estimate, not company-confirmed.
Has StockX had layoffs?
Yes. StockX cut 12 percent of staff in April 2020, 8 percent in June 2022, and 80 more employees in November 2022, plus a January 2024 restructuring with its CMO departing. Revelio Labs data shows headcount fell from about 2,220 in 2023 to 1,625 by Q4 2025, a 26.8 percent decline.
Who owns StockX?
StockX is privately held, founded in Detroit in 2015-2016 by Dan Gilbert, Josh Luber, Greg Schwartz and Chris Kaufman. It has no parent company and is backed by venture investors including DST Global, General Atlantic, GGV Capital, Battery Ventures and GV, last valued at over $3.8 billion in April 2021.
Is GOAT or eBay a bigger threat to StockX?
Both. GOAT is a direct peer reportedly holding 12 to 15 percent of the global sneaker resale market as of 2025 with the same authenticate-then-ship model. eBay has shipped its own Authenticity Guarantee for sneakers over $100 as a lower-fee alternative, directly contesting StockX's core category.
Could AI replace StockX's authentication process?
Not entirely. StockX relies on a physical global verification-center network across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia that AI cannot fully replicate, though image-based inspection and pricing analytics are augmentable. Competitor GOAT already markets AI biometric verification (vendor-claimed, 2025), pressuring StockX's software-side authentication edge.
What is StockX worth in 2026?
StockX's last confirmed valuation is over $3.8 billion, set in April 2021 via a $60 million Series E-1 round plus a $195 million secondary tender. As of mid-2026 no newer priced funding round has been publicly reported, making this a five-year-stale mark.
