The call

Superloop keeps taking NBN share from bigger telcos on the strength of owned network assets, with integration execution and price competition as the main things to watch.

Superloop builds and owns physical fiber cables across Australia and buys access to government-built networks, then sells internet to homes and businesses. It is hard to copy because laying fiber takes years and costs billions, plus regulators approve who gets to do it, but a competitor called Aussie Broadband has won better customer satisfaction ratings and charges similar prices, which limits Superloop's ability to raise prices and earn bigger profits. The company just bought two smaller rivals (Lightning Broadband and neoloop) to grow faster, so watching whether it can combine them smoothly and keep gaining customers from Telstra and Optus will determine if the bet pays off.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI helps Superloop cut costs in billing and customer service, it does not threaten the fibre and wholesale business itself. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Telstra, Optus, TPG Telecom (Belong, amaysim). Bigger rivals run competing NBN and fibre brands, but Superloop's NBN share kept rising to 7.0% through mid 2026. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Owns physical fibre and subsea assets plus long wholesale contracts like Origin Energy, so rivals can't copy this with software.
What would change this call
Superloop's NBN market share figure in FY27 results (due August 2027). Continued rise would confirm share is still moving from incumbents to Superloop.
Aussie Broadband's 'Best Brand NBN' satisfaction award result for 2027. A sixth consecutive win would show a durable brand-trust gap versus Superloop.
Superloop's underlying EBITDA margin in FY27 results versus FY26 guidance of A$112-120m. A margin drop would signal price-war pressure eroding its cost advantage.

Named risks
  • Integration execution risk on Lightning Broadband and neoloop wholesale consolidation. Severity: medium

  • Incumbents (Telstra Belong, Optus amaysim) could price-war challenger tier margins. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Superloop profitable in 2026?
Yes. Superloop posted its first positive Net Profit After Tax in FY25 (year ended 30 June 2025) with A$92.2 million underlying EBITDA, and upgraded FY26 EBITDA guidance to A$112-120 million as of 18 February 2026, per its half-year results.
Who owns Superloop?
Superloop (ASX: SLC) is a public company with no controlling parent; retail investors hold roughly 57-59% and institutions the rest as of early 2026. Origin Energy became a strategic shareholder via share issuances tied to a wholesale broadband deal, with escrow releases continuing through 2026.
Could AI replace Superloop?
No. Superloop's core business is owned fibre, subsea cable stakes, spectrum, and NBN wholesale access, none of which AI can substitute. Instead Superloop uses AI internally: by February 2026 its bots Teddy and Mo handled over half of customer service interactions, cutting costs rather than threatening the business.
Who is Superloop's biggest competitor?
Aussie Broadband is Superloop's closest challenger-brand rival and has won Choice's 'Best Brand NBN' satisfaction award five years running as of March 2026, giving it a brand-trust edge while Superloop positions on network speed, per Ookla's Fastest Fixed Network title for H1 2025.
Is Superloop losing NBN market share to Telstra?
No, the opposite: Superloop's NBN market share rose to 7.0% by mid-2026, up from 6.6% in FY25 and 6.3% at end-2024, with 127,000 new NBN customers added in the year to September 2025, as challenger brands keep taking share from incumbents like Telstra.
Did Superloop acquire Lightning Broadband?
Yes. Superloop signed a binding agreement in February 2026 to acquire Lynham Networks (parent of Lightning Broadband) for A$165 million cash, adding about 16,000 FTTP services; the deal completed 29 May 2026 with the Joint Functional Separation Undertaking approved.
