The call

Tableau's install base is deep but its growth engine is stalling, with Power BI and plain AI chat both pulling at the edges while Salesforce bets on Tableau Next to hold the line.

Tableau lets companies turn raw data into charts and reports that employees use every day. It is hard to rip out because almost all Fortune 500 companies rely on it and have built thousands of custom reports, but Microsoft Power BI is quietly taking share by being cheaper and bundled with other software companies already buy. At the same time, people can now ask ChatGPT or Claude to make quick charts instead of waiting for an analyst to build one in Tableau, which eats into the reason to keep paying. Tableau's parent company Salesforce admitted in recent earnings that Tableau sales are slowing down from growing 15 percent to only 4 percent, which is a red flag. The company is betting on a new product called Tableau Next that would let AI agents do the chart-building work instead of humans, but whether that will actually stop the slowdown or just delay it is still unknown.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot chat interfaces. Ask-a-question chat tools skip dashboard building entirely, hitting the ad-hoc analysis work Tableau built its business on. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft Power BI and Fabric. Power BI ships free-ish inside Microsoft 365 and Fabric, undercutting Tableau on price while Salesforce reports Tableau bookings softness. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 97% of Fortune 100 already run Tableau, and ripping out 33M semantic models and CRM ties is a huge switching cost.

Questions people ask
Is Tableau profitable or growing under Salesforce in 2026?
Tableau's standalone financials are not disclosed separately, but Salesforce's Q1 FY2027 earnings call (May 27, 2026) explicitly flagged softness in Tableau bookings and renewals, with growth decelerating from 15% to 4% in recent quarters, even as total Salesforce revenue rose 13% YoY to $11.13B.
Could AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude replace Tableau?
Generic AI chat is eroding Tableau's ad-hoc dashboard-authoring workflow, but Tableau responded in May 2026 with an open MCP server letting Claude, ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams query its analytics engine directly, positioning itself as infrastructure rather than a pure competitor to these models.
Is Microsoft Power BI beating Tableau in 2026?
Yes, most 2026 trackers place Microsoft Power BI as market leader with 20-49% share depending on methodology, bundled into Microsoft Fabric and Copilot, while Salesforce itself reported bookings and renewals softness for Tableau in May 2026.
Who owns Tableau and is it still independent?
Tableau has been a fully owned subsidiary of Salesforce since June 2019, acquired for $15.7B in an all-stock deal, then the largest acquisition in Salesforce history. It has no independent stock listing; its former ticker DATA was delisted at acquisition.
What is Tableau Next and does it fix Tableau's growth problem?
Tableau Next is an agentic analytics platform (GA April 2025, expanded May 2026) with AI agents like Concierge and Data Pro, built on Salesforce's Agentforce/Data 360 stack. It is unproven: Salesforce still flagged Tableau bookings and renewals softness in its May 2026 earnings call.
Who is Tableau's biggest competitor in 2026?
Microsoft Power BI is Tableau's dominant competitor, holding an estimated 20-49% BI market share in 2026 versus Tableau, per Tech Insider's June 2026 comparison, with Qlik Sense (10%+ share, ~40,000 customers) and AI-native entrant Golden Analytics also pressuring Tableau.
