The call

TableCheck still runs most of Japan's high-end restaurant bookings, but its AI roadmap and a bigger-funded Resy/Tock combination are both moving pieces worth tracking.

TableCheck runs a reservation system for high-end restaurants and hotels, mostly in Japan where it controls about 82 out of every 100 bookings. It is hard to replace there because restaurants have built their whole workflow around TableCheck's software for over 15 years, and switching would be painful and expensive. But AI assistants like the voice agent TableCheck itself is building could soon make basic reservation-taking automatic and cheap everywhere, which means the company's real edge might shift from "we take reservations" to "we predict demand and manage fancy hotel networks." The key question is whether TableCheck stays focused on winning in Asia or tries to compete in the United States, where bigger companies like OpenTable and Resy already have customers and resources.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI phone-booking agents, including TableCheck's own Aiello integration. Aiello lets AI take reservation calls, which could turn TableCheck's core booking layer into a commodity feature. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: American Express (Resy and Tock merger). Amex is merging Resy and Tock into one platform, targeted for summer 2026, with no confirmed Japan launch yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 15 years of integrations with POS, payment, and hotel property systems that Michelin venues and luxury chains already run on daily.
What would change this call
Toreta announces new Michelin-starred or luxury hotel restaurant clients within 12 months. Would show TableCheck's high-end Japan segment is losing exclusivity to a local rival.
OpenTable, Resy, or Toast launches a localized Japan product with a named marquee hotel-chain partner. Would show a Western giant credibly entering TableCheck's core defended market.
Resy/Tock merger (targeted summer 2026) completes and the combined entity announces APAC or Japan expansion. Would show a better-funded rival platform moving directly at TableCheck's home turf.
Key numbers
  • 82.5% share of Japan restaurant booking systems (2026-04-26)
  • 10,000+ restaurants across 35 countries (2024-08-22)
  • 700 million yen debt raised for expansion (2025-12)
Named risks
  • Aiello and similar AI voice agents could commoditize phone-booking, TableCheck's traditional core service, starting July 2026. Severity: medium
  • Global footprint outside Japan remains thin, leaving expansion markets exposed to larger, better-capitalized rivals. Severity: high
  • No audited financials are public; growth and share claims rely on self-reported or third-party estimates. Severity: medium
  • Resy/Tock merger (summer 2026) creates a better-funded Amex-backed platform that could pursue APAC expansion. Severity: medium
  • Frequent shareholder and capital-structure changes since August 2024 could signal instability or pending ownership transition. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is TableCheck profitable in 2026?
TableCheck is privately held and has never disclosed audited profit figures. A November 2025 business profile reported revenue grew 2.6x between 2020 and 2023 despite the pandemic, but no net income or margin data has been published, so profitability cannot be confirmed from public sources.
Could AI replace TableCheck's reservation system?
TableCheck is building AI into its own product rather than being replaced by it. In July 2026 it integrated Taiwan-based Aiello's generative-AI voice agent for phone bookings in 50+ languages, and in March 2026 launched its own 'Predictive Insights' forecasting tool, positioning AI as an upsell, not a threat.
Who owns TableCheck?
TableCheck is privately held and VC-backed, led by CEO Yu Taniguchi and co-founder/CTO John Shields. Recent capital events include a March 2025 Series D from Hiramatsu and Wondertable, and an April 2026 secondary investment involving a Toho Gas-affiliated CVC, JFR MIRAI CREATORS Fund, and Kepple Liquidity Fund.
Is TableCheck a safe company to join right now?
TableCheck shows signs of stability and growth: it raised a Y700 million debt facility in December 2025 for expansion, took new strategic investment in April 2026, and has been steadily hiring executives (Head of Sales Japan, Head of Accounting) through 2024-2025, per its team page as of 2025.
Who is TableCheck's biggest competitor?
In Japan, TableCheck's closest rivals are Toreta and ebica, both named alongside it as dominant reservation-ledger vendors in a 2022 market analysis. Globally, Booking Holdings' OpenTable and American Express's Resy, which is merging with Tock in summer 2026, are the larger-scale incumbents.
Will Resy and Tock's merger threaten TableCheck?
American Express-owned Resy and Tock are reported to be merging in summer 2026 into a combined network the companies describe as covering 25,000+ venues, per a July 2026 industry blog. This creates a better-funded US-based rival, though it has not yet launched a localized Japan product as of July 2026.
