The call

Tailscale is growing fast on lock-in and AI-driven demand for secure device connections, with Cloudflare circling but not yet shipping a real rival.

Tailscale makes software that lets teams connect computers securely over the internet without exposing them to the public. It is hard to replace because tens of thousands of customers have wired Tailscale into their existing systems (identity, Kubernetes, CI/CD), and Tailscale owns the relay servers that route traffic, which an AI tool cannot easily recreate from scratch. Cloudflare is the only big competitor with the reach to build something similar, but has not yet done so despite having the ability to. The picture could change if Cloudflare ships a true mesh networking product that starts pulling developers away, or if Tailscale's new AI governance tool (Aperture) fails to gain adoption, which would weaken the story the company is selling to investors about its future.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI coding agents commoditizing ACL writing and firewall troubleshooting. AI agents could automate the network config work customers pay Tailscale to simplify, but AI agents themselves are also new customers needing secure connections. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Cloudflare. Cloudflare has developer distribution and an access product but has not shipped a true mesh rival pulling Tailscale customers away yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Tens of thousands of tailnets wired into customer identity systems, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines make switching costly.
What would change this call
Cloudflare launches a mesh or peer-to-peer VPN product targeting developers. Would show the one structurally un-barred giant is finally contesting Tailscale's base.
Tailscale's Aperture reaches general availability with published pricing. Would show Tailscale converting AI-agent governance into a real second product line.
Tailscale announces a new funding round or valuation reset. Would show whether investors still back the doubling-revenue growth story.
Key numbers
  • Nearing 40,000 paid business customers, up from ~20,000 (2026-07-21)
  • $160M Series C at $1.5B valuation (2025-04-08)
  • Sales doubling every year since 2019, on track again in 2026 (2026-07-21)
Named risks
  • Cloudflare could ship a true mesh/peer-to-peer product leveraging its existing developer distribution. Severity: high
  • Open-source alternatives like Headscale or NetBird could erode net revenue retention if AI makes self-hosting trivial. Severity: medium
  • Lack of FIPS 140-2/FedRAMP certification blocks regulated government and defense customers that Zscaler and Cloudflare can serve. Severity: medium
  • Aperture AI-governance product still in beta with no finalized GA pricing as of July 2026, uncertain monetization. Severity: medium
  • Revenue figures rely on CEO statements and unconfirmed third-party estimates rather than audited disclosures. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Tailscale profitable in 2026?
Not yet, but CEO Avery Pennarun said in July 2026 that Tailscale could become profitable within a year on its existing balance sheet, while doubling sales in 2026 as it has done every year since founding in 2019.
Who owns Tailscale?
Tailscale is privately held and venture-backed, with no parent company. Investors include Accel, CRV, Insight Partners, Heavybit, Uncork Capital and Inovia Capital, following a $160M USD Series C announced April 8, 2025 at roughly a $1.5B valuation.
Could AI replace Tailscale?
AI coding agents can help write ACLs and ease self-hosted alternatives like Headscale or NetBird, but Tailscale's control-plane, DERP relay infrastructure, and deep SSO/SCIM and Kubernetes integrations across its customer base are not easily replicated by AI as of July 2026.
Is Tailscale's biggest competitor Cloudflare?
Cloudflare Access/Zero Trust is the closest large incumbent threat, holding FedRAMP Moderate certification that Tailscale lacks, but as of July 2026 Cloudflare has not shipped a mesh/peer-to-peer product visibly taking Tailscale's customer share.
How many customers does Tailscale have in 2026?
Tailscale was nearing 40,000 paid business customers as of July 21, 2026, roughly double the approximately 20,000 it had in November 2025, with named customers including Nvidia, SAP, Mistral, Cohere, and Microsoft.
Has Tailscale raised new funding recently?
Tailscale's last disclosed round was a $160M USD ($230M CAD) Series C announced April 8, 2025 at roughly a $1.5B valuation; as of July 2026 CEO Avery Pennarun said the company was weighing raising additional funding to grow faster.
