The call

Takealot turned its first real profit the same year Amazon showed up, but thin margins and a cautious parent leave the next few quarters open.

Takealot is an e-commerce company that sells almost everything online in South Africa and also runs its own delivery network using warehouses, electric bikes, and personal shoppers in townships. It is hard to replace because it owns its delivery system (Amazon and most rivals rent from others), has 15 years of experience, and just became profitable, but Amazon now operates there too with deeper pockets, and cheap imports from Shein and Temu take a big chunk of clothing sales. The one thing that could change everything is whether Amazon can build out fast delivery in South Africa the way it did elsewhere, or whether Takealot's thin profits (only 1 cent per dollar of sales) leave it too weak to fight back if Amazon or a local rival suddenly moves faster.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI shopping agent or AI-native retailer is pulling South African buyers away yet; the fight is still human-run pricing and logistics. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Amazon South Africa. Amazon launched locally in May 2024 with 10,000+ sellers and Prime, but reports call its start slow while Takealot kept growing. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 15 years of owned warehouses, e-bike and EV delivery fleets, and a township personal-shopper network Amazon has to build from scratch.
What would change this call
Amazon SA Prime pricing or seller-count moves reported through H2 2026. Would show whether Amazon is converting its presence into real share gains against Takealot.
Naspers/Prosus HY2027 results, expected November 2026. Would show whether Takealot's FY2026 profit turnaround held or reversed.
SARS tariff/VAT changes on Chinese cross-border parcels taking effect. Would show whether Shein/Temu's cost advantage over Takealot sellers narrows or persists.

Questions people ask
Is Takealot profitable in 2026?
Yes. Takealot Group reported its first ever full year adjusted operating profit of $11m on revenue over $1bn for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, a turnaround from a $13m adjusted loss in FY2025, per company and press reporting from June 30, 2026.
Could AI replace Takealot?
No. Takealot's core value is a 15 year owned last mile network of warehouses, e-bike and EV fleets, and township personal shoppers across South Africa. AI augments internal operations but cannot substitute physical trucks, couriers, or warehouse fulfilment as of mid 2026.
Who owns Takealot?
Takealot Group is a private subsidiary of Naspers, the JSE-listed South African group that also controls Amsterdam-listed Prosus. Naspers merged Takealot with Kalahari.com in 2015 and had raised its stake to 96% by 2018.
Is Amazon beating Takealot in South Africa?
Not yet. Amazon South Africa launched in May 2024 and signed over 10,000 sellers in its first year, but reporting describes a 'slow start.' Takealot still grew group revenue 18% and turned profitable through fiscal year 2026 despite Amazon's entry.
What is Takealot's biggest competitor?
Amazon South Africa, which launched in May 2024 with 10,000-plus sellers and a Prime subscription, alongside Chinese fast fashion platforms Shein and Temu, which reporting from June 30, 2026 links to roughly 37% of South Africa's online clothing market.
Is Takealot laying off staff?
No mass layoffs are reported. Takealot Group states it had over 7,300 employees as of late 2025, and the company's own FY2026 results describe continued hiring alongside deployment of AI agents to streamline operations, not workforce cuts.
