The call

Tanla stays profitable on cheap bulk messaging while betting that Wisely and Trubloq can grow fast enough to matter before AI-native channels erode the core business.

Tanla sends text messages and business alerts for banks and companies in India. Right now, 91% of its money comes from simple bulk texting, which is cheap and easy to copy, and competitors like Twilio do the same thing globally. The real threat is that Google and Meta are putting AI smarts directly into WhatsApp and text messaging, so customers won't need a middleman like Tanla anymore. The one thing that could save Tanla is if its newer AI product called Wisely takes off with big customers and grows from 9% to 20-30% of the business before the old texting business falls apart, but there is no sign that is happening fast enough.

Why
01
AI pressure: Meta and Google embedding native AI into WhatsApp and RCS. WhatsApp and RCS now carry built-in AI messaging, shrinking the plain A2P SMS routing that makes up 91% of Tanla's revenue. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Twilio. Twilio holds roughly a quarter of global CPaaS share and sits above Tanla in Gartner's rankings, pressuring pricing in overlapping markets. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Trubloq handles about 63% of India's A2P SMS traffic and its TRAI compliance tooling is hard for foreign rivals to replicate quickly.
What would change this call
Digital Platforms revenue stays near 9% of total for FY27 Q2 and Q3 filings. shows the high-margin business is not scaling fast enough to offset the commoditized 91% segment.
Standalone parent revenue for FY27 posts a second consecutive yearly decline. confirms core Enterprise Communications business is structurally shrinking, not a one-off dip.
Wisely Ai announces a second telco-scale deployment beyond Indosat within the next year. would prove the AI product is repeatable rather than a one-client success story.

Questions people ask
Is Tanla Platforms in financial trouble?
No, current numbers point to steady profitability rather than distress. Q1 FY27 revenue grew 18% year over year to ₹1,226.39 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, with net profit up 20% to ₹142.2 crore. The main financial overhang to watch is an ongoing tax dispute, reported at figures ranging from about ₹47 crore to ₹4,690 crore, which the company aims to resolve well below ₹500 crore by March 2027.
Who are Tanla Platforms' biggest competitors?
Tanla's Karix unit competes for the same Indian bank and telco accounts as Route Mobile (now backed by Proximus, BICS, and Telesign), Gupshup, and Twilio and Infobip. Gartner's July 2025 Magic Quadrant rated Twilio and Infobip as Leaders while placing Tanla as a Visionary, and Mordor Intelligence named Gupshup alongside Tanla as a top India CPaaS player in March 2026. This is a crowded field where several rivals are better funded or more globally scaled.
Is Tanla Platforms at risk from AI?
Partly. Cheap LLM-based fraud and spam detection tools could replicate what Tanla's Wisely and Trubloq.ai layers do, which would squeeze margins over time even though this threat is still building rather than fully realized as of July 2026. Its TRAI-mandated DLT compliance work through Trubloq and direct telco integrations offer some insulation, since these are harder for generic AI tools to replicate quickly.
Does Tanla Platforms have a strong competitive moat?
Tanla's moat rests on over two decades of entrenched bank and telco routing relationships built through Karix, together with TRAI-mandated DLT compliance work via Trubloq that is harder for rivals to replicate quickly. That protection is real but narrow, resting on regulatory and integration lock-in rather than a differentiated product, in a market where Gartner's July 2025 Magic Quadrant already rated Twilio and Infobip as Leaders while placing Tanla as a Visionary.
What should I watch for with Tanla Platforms going forward?
Two dated items are worth tracking: whether Tanla sustains double-digit year-over-year revenue growth through the fiscal year ending March 2027, and whether its pending tax dispute resolves for a net cost well below ₹500 crore by that same date. Q2 FY27 earnings, expected in Q3 2026, should give an early read on both fronts.
