The call

Temenos still runs the core ledgers of 41 of the world's top 50 banks, and nothing has pulled a major one off it yet.

Temenos sells computer systems that run the main operations of banks around the world. Over 940 large banks use its software, and switching to a different system would take years and cost a fortune, which makes it very hard for competitors to steal customers away. The real question is whether newer cloud-based banking software from startups can convince banks to replace Temenos during their next major upgrade, or whether the company's leadership changes and smaller employee count hint at trouble beneath the surface.

Why
01
AI pressure: GenAI coding tools like GitHub Copilot and Cursor that could let banks build custom cores in-house. AI coding assistants could someday lower the cost of banks building their own core systems, but none has replaced Temenos yet. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Oracle, pushing FLEXCUBE and cloud banking tools at the same large bank accounts. Oracle keeps investing in its own core banking stack, aiming to pull future migrations away from Temenos over time. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Multi-year, high-risk core ledger migrations and certification in 145 countries make banks reluctant to rip out Temenos once installed.
What would change this call
Temenos names a permanent, full-time CFO to replace interim arrangement. Would show leadership stabilizing after CEO transition and reduce management uncertainty.
A top-20 bank replaces its core ledger with Thought Machine, Mambu, or 10x Banking. Would show cloud-native rivals can displace Temenos from entrenched installed base, not just greenfield deals.
Headcount continues falling in 2026-27 while ARR growth slows below mid-teens. Would suggest cost cuts are masking demand softness rather than reflecting efficiency gains.
Key numbers
  • ARR $859.9m, up 15% year over year (2025-12-31)
  • Non-IFRS EBIT margin 34.7% (2025-12-31)
  • Market cap CHF 4.6b vs CHF 184.55 all-time high share price (2026-07-21)
Named risks
  • Leadership instability with two CEO changes since 2024 and no permanent CFO named. Severity: medium
  • Headcount decline (down ~19% since 2023) could mask underlying demand softness. Severity: medium
  • Hindenburg short-seller allegations from Feb 2024 remain disputed and could resurface investor concern. Severity: low
  • Integration risk from newly completed additiv acquisition (July 2026) affecting Wealth segment execution. Severity: low
  • Activist/private-equity buyout pressure given valuation well below CHF 184.55 all-time high. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Temenos profitable in 2025?
Yes. Temenos reported FY-25 non-IFRS EBIT margin of 34.7% and free cash flow of $256.4m, up 15% year over year, with ARR of $859.9m (up 15%), per its own Annual Report and Accounts 2025 published February 24, 2026.
Could AI replace Temenos?
Unlikely soon. Temenos's moat is deep integration into banks' regulated core ledgers across 145 countries and 950+ clients; a core migration takes years. Instead Temenos embeds AI (Azure OpenAI Copilot, FCM AI Agent) into its own platform, as shown May 2026, rather than being displaced by it.
Who owns Temenos and is it a takeover target?
Temenos is publicly traded on the SIX Swiss Exchange (ticker TEMN), market cap about CHF 4.6 billion as of July 21, 2026. Private equity firms reportedly circled it as a buyout target in 2023-2024, but no deal has materialized.
Who is Temenos's biggest competitor?
Temenos competes with large incumbents Finastra, FIS, Fiserv, Oracle FLEXCUBE, Infosys Finacle and TCS BaNCS, plus cloud-native challengers Thought Machine, Mambu and 10x Banking, who mainly win greenfield digital-bank deals rather than displacing Temenos's installed base as of mid-2026.
What happened with the Hindenburg Research allegations against Temenos?
In February 2024 short-seller Hindenburg Research alleged accounting irregularities at Temenos. An independent review published in April 2024 found the allegations inaccurate and misleading, a conclusion Hindenburg disputed, per Wikipedia's Temenos AG entry.
Has Temenos had leadership turmoil?
Yes. CEO Jean-Pierre Brulard stepped down in September 2025 after 16 months; CFO Takis Spiliopoulos became interim CEO and was confirmed as permanent CEO by December 4, 2025, while also serving as interim CFO, per FinTech Futures.
