The call

TI's cost advantage from owning its factories and its deep catalog of parts customers design in for years keep it ahead, with China trade rules the main thing that could shake that up.

Texas Instruments designs and manufactures analog chips, the basic building blocks that manage power and signals in phones, cars, and data centers. It is hard to replace because the company owns massive factories that cost sixty billion dollars to build, which competitors have decided not to do, and because customers have been using the same Texas Instruments parts for ten to fifteen years in products that would be expensive to redesign. The biggest risk is if the US and China trade war expands to block sales of analog chips to Chinese companies, which buy more than one fifth of what Texas Instruments sells.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not eating TI, it is feeding it: data center chip revenue jumped about 90% year over year in Q1 2026 as TI supplies power chips for AI servers. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No rival chipmaker has shipped a product winning share in TI's core analog and power sockets at scale. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Owned 300mm fabs give TI a lower cost floor than rivals who use outside foundries, plus 80,000 products sold direct to customers who rarely switch designs.
What would change this call
China adds further export/import restrictions targeting analog chips beyond the June 2026 entity-list additions. Would show China's >20% revenue exposure converting from risk into actual revenue loss.
TI's data-center revenue growth rate in Q2/Q3 2026 earnings versus the +90% YoY pace reported in Q1 2026. Would show whether AI-driven demand is sustaining or decelerating from the current narrative.
Regulatory clearance progress or delay on the $7.5B Silicon Labs acquisition ahead of its planned H1 2027 close. Would show whether antitrust risk is materializing and delaying TI's diversification plan.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue $17.68B, up 13% YoY (2025-12-31)
  • Analog segment 79% of revenue, ~19% global share (2025-12-31)
  • China over 20% of 2025 revenue (2025-12-31)
Named risks
  • China export-control escalation could threaten over 20% of FY2025 revenue. Severity: high
  • Silicon Labs $7.5B acquisition faces regulatory and integration execution risk before H1 2027 close. Severity: medium
  • Stock up ~70-77% YTD by July 2026 creates valuation risk if data-center growth decelerates. Severity: medium
  • Sherman SM1 fab ramp and $60B multi-fab capex buildout carry execution risk. Severity: medium
  • Analog business is inherently cyclical, as shown by sharp 2023-2024 demand swings. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Texas Instruments profitable in 2026?
Yes. TI reported FY2025 net income of $5.00 billion on revenue of $17.68 billion, a 28.3% net margin, as of December 31, 2025. Q1 2026 revenue rose further to $4.83 billion, up about 19% YoY, per TI's January 27, 2026 earnings release.
Could AI replace Texas Instruments?
No. TI makes analog and power-management chips, not AI compute silicon, so AI is a demand driver rather than a substitution threat. Data-center revenue surged about 90% YoY in Q1 2026 as TI co-designed 800VDC power architecture with Nvidia, announced March 16, 2026.
Who is Texas Instruments' biggest competitor?
TI's closest peers in analog and power management are Analog Devices, onsemi, Monolithic Power Systems, Infineon, STMicroelectronics, and NXP. As of mid-2026 none has shipped a rival product eroding TI's roughly 19% global analog share or its #1 position.
Who owns Texas Instruments?
Texas Instruments (Nasdaq: TXN) is a publicly traded company with no parent, roughly 908 million shares outstanding as of FY2025, and a market capitalization of about $274 to $278 billion as of mid-July 2026, per MarketBeat data from July 16, 2026.
Is Texas Instruments exposed to China trade risk?
Yes. China accounted for over 20% of TI's FY2025 revenue. In June 2026 China added 56 U.S. entities to restriction lists amid an expanded U.S. Department of Defense list, escalating export-control tensions that could pressure TI's China-dependent analog business.
What is Texas Instruments' Silicon Labs acquisition?
In February 2026 TI announced a definitive agreement to acquire Silicon Labs for $231.00 per share in cash, an enterprise value of about $7.5 billion, expected to close in H1 2027 with roughly $450 million in projected annual synergies, per TI's February 4, 2026 newsroom release.
