Tezos Foundation
Swiss non-profit funding development of the Tezos blockchain and its L1/L2 ecosystem.
The Foundation itself is well-funded and stable, but Tezos the network is a small player watching Base, Arbitrum, and Solana take the market it was built to win.
Tezos Foundation is a well-funded organization in Switzerland trying to make Tezos, a blockchain platform, compete with Ethereum and its add-on networks like Arbitrum and Optimism. The main problem is that Tezos's own token has lost most of its value, and the new tools the Foundation is building (called Etherlink and Tezos X) are still just test versions while Arbitrum, Optimism, and other Ethereum add-ons already have real users and money flowing through them. The one thing that could turn this around is if Tezos X and Etherlink actually launch and attract real developers and users over the next few years, but right now they are way behind their competitors.
Tezos X mainnet launch date and initial DeFi TVL after leaving testnet (~2026 target). Shows whether the flagship new rollup can attract real usage versus stay experimental.
XTZ price trend relative to its current ~$0.22 level over the next year. Indicates whether market confidence and treasury purchasing power keep eroding.
- Treasury holds ~2,903 BTC, worth ~$188.6M
- XTZ trades at $0.22, down ~79-89% from 2021 peak
- XTZ market cap around $249-255M
- XTZ trading near all-time lows ($0.22, July 2026), reducing treasury market value and ecosystem confidence.
- Tezos X and Etherlink remain unshipped from testnet (Previewnet) as of mid-2026, delaying competitive relevance.
- Ecosystem activity concentrated in one gaming app, over 80% of active users, limiting diversification.
- Sector-wide crypto foundation enforcement actions (e.g. SEC vs Tron Foundation, March 2026) create headline regulatory risk by association.
- Leadership turnover cadence of roughly 1-2 years creates governance transition uncertainty.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum L2 ecosystem (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base) | losing to | Etherlink/Tezos X still in testnet as of mid-2026 while rivals hold established liquidity and dev share |
| Solana | losing to | Broader smart-contract mindshare and DeFi liquidity dominance persists as of 2026 |
| Ethereum Foundation | contesting | Peer L1 foundation model; Tezos explicitly aims to close the gap per May 2026 analysis |
| Base | losing to | Named as a rival L2 Tezos X/Etherlink must close the gap against, per May 29 2026 report |
- Is the Tezos Foundation still funded and operating in 2026?
- Yes. As of mid-July 2026 the Tezos Foundation holds roughly 2,903 BTC worth about $188.6 million plus XTZ holdings from its 2017 ICO, funding a lean 17-person operating team and 7-member Council overseeing grants and ecosystem support.
- Who runs the Tezos Foundation now?
- Alexis Bonte has served as President of the Foundation Council since October 10, 2023, with Jean-Frederic Mognetti as Executive Director. Fleur Pellerin, a former French government minister, joined the Council in March 2024.
- Is XTZ, the Tezos token, a good investment right now?
- XTZ traded around $0.22 as of July 21, 2026, down roughly 79 to 89 percent from its 2021 all-time high near $9.12 to $9.18, and down about 65 percent year over year, per crypto.news and CoinGecko data.
- Was the Tezos Foundation ever sued or fined by regulators?
- The Foundation settled a 2017-2020 securities class action for $25 million in September 2020 without admitting wrongdoing. It states no government enforcement action has ever been filed against it, as of its May 2025 FAQ.
- What is Tezos X and is it live yet?
- Tezos X is a planned unified execution layer merging Etherlink and Tezlink into one enshrined rollup. As of mid-2026 it remains in an experimental Previewnet testnet phase; the Tezlink Shadownet testnet was shut down May 18, 2026 to consolidate into it.
- Can Tezos Foundation compete with Ethereum's Layer 2 ecosystem?
- It is trying via Etherlink, an EVM-compatible L2 on Tezos Smart Rollups, but as of June 2026 Etherlink and Tezos X remain testnet-stage while Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base already hold established liquidity and developer share, per Foundation-adjacent reporting from May 2026.
