The call

TAS keeps its sovereign space work protected by law, while its commercial GEO telecom line and internal shape wait on a merger decision and an order recovery still unproven.

Thales Alenia Space builds satellites and systems for European governments, the military, and some commercial customers. Its government work is hard to replace because European countries are required by law to buy from European companies for sensitive projects, and Thales has 40+ years of proven track record that SpaceX cannot legally touch. However, its older satellite business that sells to phone companies is being eaten alive by Starlink's cheaper internet from space, which forced the company to plan cutting 1,300 jobs. The biggest wildcard is whether three major European defense contractors (Airbus, Leonardo, and Thales) will actually merge into one giant company, which could either fix the company or tear it apart through consolidation chaos.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. TAS builds hardware and sovereign systems; no AI lab or product competes directly for its ESA/Galileo work. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: SpaceX/Starlink. Starlink's LEO constellation model has eroded GEO telecom orders, the trigger behind TAS's 1,300-position restructuring plan. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Regulation and 40+ years of flight heritage keep sovereign work like Galileo and ESA science missions legally closed to SpaceX.
What would change this call
EU regulators rule on the Airbus-Leonardo-Thales Project Bromo merger by Q4 2026. Shows whether TAS restructures into a merged entity or stays independent.
TAS confirms whether the 1,300-position cut plan is resumed or permanently cancelled in 2026. Shows if GEO telecom order recovery cited in Dec 2025 is durable or temporary.
OHB's legal challenge to the merger reaches a court ruling or withdrawal. Shows whether a rival can block or delay the sovereign-space consolidation.
Key numbers
  • 2025 revenue about €2.36bn (2025)
  • ESA Argonaut lunar lander contract worth €862M (2025-01-30)
  • 1,300 positions targeted for cuts or redeployment (2024-03-06)
Named risks
  • Project Bromo merger clearance could stall or collapse under EU antitrust remedies. Severity: high
  • Commercial GEO telecom segment remains vulnerable to Starlink-driven order declines. Severity: medium
  • Labor court rulings and CGT union action over the 1,300-position plan could escalate. Severity: medium
  • Post-merger site and headcount consolidation could reopen restructuring in overlap zones. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Thales Alenia Space profitable?
TAS does not disclose standalone profit, but revenue has grown steadily: about €2.15bn in 2022, €2.2bn in 2023, €2.23bn in 2024, and €2.36bn in 2025, per company reporting, suggesting a financially stable JV despite restructuring pressure.
Who owns Thales Alenia Space?
Thales Alenia Space is a joint venture formed in 2007, owned 67% by Thales Group and 33% by Leonardo. On October 23, 2025, both parents plus Airbus signed an MoU (Project Bromo) to merge their space units, still awaiting EU regulatory clearance as of July 2026.
Is Airbus or SpaceX the bigger threat to Thales Alenia Space?
Both. Airbus is a European rival turned prospective merger partner (Oct 2025 MoU), while SpaceX's Starlink is eroding TAS's commercial geostationary telecom orders, the segment that triggered a 1,300-position restructuring plan announced March 6, 2024.
Could AI replace Thales Alenia Space?
No. TAS's core business is physical satellite manufacturing and sovereign prime-contracting on programs like Galileo and ESA's EnVision, protected by ITAR-style export controls and ESA geographic-return rules; AI is used in-house as a feature, e.g. the IMAGIN-e ISS payload (operational since Jan 30, 2026), not a substitute.
Is Thales Alenia Space laying off employees?
TAS announced plans in March 2024 to cut or redeploy 1,300 positions (980-1,124 in France) due to a geostationary telecom order downturn. As of December 17, 2025, the plan remained suspended amid a labor court ruling and a market recovery cited by management.
What is Project Bromo and does it involve Thales Alenia Space?
Project Bromo is the codename for the October 23, 2025 MoU between Airbus, Leonardo and Thales to merge Thales Alenia Space, Telespazio, and Airbus's Space Systems into one entity (35% Airbus, 32.5% each Leonardo/Thales), targeting 2027 operation pending EU antitrust clearance.
