The call

The RealReal is finally making money and growing GMV past $2 billion, but a live Chanel lawsuit and eBay's AI authentication push both land in the same window as its thin margins.

The RealReal buys and resells high-end used items like designer handbags and clothes. It uses a 13-year database of fakes it has caught, physical stores, and staff who inspect items by hand to stay ahead of imitators. But eBay just bought technology to authenticate luxury goods too, and other companies like Vestiaire Collective and Fashionphile are in the same business. The biggest threat is a lawsuit from Chanel (running since 2018) claiming The RealReal sold counterfeit items and misled customers; if Chanel wins or a settlement forces big changes, it could damage trust in the brand. The company just barely turned profitable for the first time, but profits are thin and debt payments are due in a few years, leaving little room for error.

Why
01
AI pressure: eBay (Certilogo AI authentication). eBay bought Certilogo to auto-authenticate luxury goods with AI, cutting the reason sellers need The RealReal's human experts. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: eBay. eBay is bolting AI authentication onto its huge existing buyer base instead of building consignment from zero. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 13 years of authentication data plus physical logistics, stores, and white-glove pickup that a bolt-on feature can't copy fast.
What would change this call
Chanel v. The RealReal core trademark and false-advertising claims reach ruling or settlement by January 2027. A loss or damaging settlement would hit brand trust in authentication, its core moat.
Q2 2026 earnings (due around August 2026) show Adjusted EBITDA margin trend versus Q1's 6.9%. Shows whether profitability inflection is durable or stalling.
eBay expands Certilogo-based authentication into a full white-glove consignment service. Would show the named incumbent moving from bolt-on feature to direct model threat.

Could AI replace The RealReal's business?
AI augments but does not replace The RealReal's core model. The company uses ML tools like TRR Vision for fraud screening and cut asset-protection opex about 60% via Motorola Solutions video AI in January 2026, but physical authentication by human experts remains central.

What is the Chanel lawsuit against The RealReal about?
Chanel sued The RealReal in 2018 (SDNY case 1:18-cv-10626) over alleged counterfeit sales and false advertising. On March 26, 2026, a court dismissed most of TRR's antitrust counterclaims, but Chanel's core trademark and false-advertising claims remained live as of July 2026.
