The call

TheFork's back-end grip on restaurants is real, but its ownership is changing hands and Google is starting to book tables directly.

TheFork lets people find and book restaurants across Europe through its website and app, and sells software to restaurants to manage reservations. It is hard to replace because 50,000 restaurants depend on TheFork's booking system and management tools, so switching would be painful for them. However, Google now has AI that can recommend and book restaurants directly, which could bypass TheFork's app entirely, though Google currently sends booking customers to TheFork rather than away from it. The biggest unknown is what American Express does with TheFork now that it owns the company: will it stay independent and invest in growth, or will it be merged into Resy, American Express's competing reservation platform, the way they just absorbed Tock?

Why
01
AI pressure: Google AI Mode agentic booking. Google AI Mode now books restaurants directly in the UK, with TheFork as a launch partner today but a bypass target tomorrow. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: American Express (acquiring TheFork) and Google. Amex is buying TheFork for $700M while folding Tock into Resy, raising the question of whether TheFork gets absorbed the same way. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep restaurant-side lock-in: 50,000+ venues run bookings and floor management through TheFork Manager software, not easy to rip out.
What would change this call
Amex either keeps TheFork as a distinct brand or folds it into Resy within 12 months of deal close. Shows whether TheFork retains identity/investment or gets absorbed like Tock was.
Google AI Mode begins listing direct restaurant booking links instead of routing through TheFork in Europe. Would show Google bypassing TheFork's marketplace layer rather than partnering with it.
TheFork's UK market share and AskTheFork AI feature usage figures reported in trade press over next 6-12 months. Would show whether weak geographies and AI adoption gaps persist or improve.

  • EU data residency and GDPR questions once under US-based Amex ownership. Severity: medium
  • Limited adoption of TheFork's own AI features versus fast-scaling Google AI Mode. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is TheFork profitable?
Yes. For the 12 months ended March 31, 2026, TheFork generated $232M in revenue and $28M in adjusted EBITDA, roughly a 12% margin, per Tripadvisor's disclosure tied to its July 2026 sale announcement to American Express.
Who owns TheFork and is it being sold?
TheFork is currently a Tripadvisor subsidiary, but on June 15, 2026 Tripadvisor agreed to sell it to American Express for $700M all-cash, expected to close before end of 2026, joining Amex's Resy and Tock dining brands.
Could Google's AI replace TheFork?
Not yet by design: Google's AI Mode agentic booking, launched April 10, 2026 in the UK with 75M daily users, chose TheFork as one of 8 launch partners rather than bypassing it, though TheFork's own AI features showed limited adoption as of February 2026.
Who is TheFork's biggest competitor?
It varies by country: Zenchef leads restaurant booking in France while TheFork holds a smaller share there as of April 2026, and Google itself is an emerging discovery/booking competitor via its AI Mode agentic feature launched April 2026.
Will TheFork be merged into Resy like Tock was?
Unclear as of mid-2026. Amex is folding its existing Tock brand into Resy during 2026, and TheFork's fate after the pending $700M Amex acquisition (announced June 15, 2026) has not been publicly confirmed either way.
How big is TheFork's restaurant network?
TheFork reports over 50,000 restaurant partners across 11 European countries as of June 15, 2026, plus over 40 million app downloads and 20 million-plus user reviews, per company and deal-related disclosures.
